Postcards

Postcards is a zero-clutter social media site that closes the generation gap. It connects users of vastly different ages through the use of age-proof postcards—online cards that family and friends can post to update loved ones on their whereabouts. Postcards allows users to request assistance from others within the group, helping families and friends support one another.

Queer Comics Database

The Queer Comics Database is an online resource designed to assist librarians, comic retailers, and readers in finding and selecting comics with LGBTQIA representation. It was developed with support from Geeks OUT, a non-profit committed to empowering the queer geek community. Input from target user populations was gathered via surveys and interviews in order to determine desired functionality. A metadata schema was constructed to promote consistency and accuracy of data entry. Additionally, a series of usability tests were conducted in order to ensure that the site meets the needs of potential users.

SafiStation Disinfectant Generator Dashboard - Impact

PATH and MSR® Global Health developed the SafiStation™, an innovative and easy-to-use device that generates chlorine for infection prevention and water treatment in low-resource health care facilities. PATH is preparing to conduct a field test of up to 50 SafiStation devices across three countries to evaluate device performance, impact, and usability. We created a web-based dashboard to combine data automatically collected by the device with digital surveys in order to visualize chlorine production and cost savings. The dashboard will help PATH efficiently and effectively monitor the device in the field and make conclusions about the best market for the SafiStation.

SafiStation: Performance Metrics

PATH and MSR® Global Health developed the SafiStation™, an innovative and easy-to-use device that generates chlorine for infection prevention and water treatment in low-resource health care facilities. PATH is preparing to conduct a field test of up to 50 SafiStation devices across three countries to evaluate device performance, impact, and usability. We created an integrated web-based data dashboard to automatically collect and visualize technical performance data collected directly from the device using cellular networks. The dashboard will give PATH and MSR access to real-time performance and functionality data to monitor device usage and identify challenges with the technical performance.

SentIO

There are many applications that use file transfer and storage internally. In some cases, like that of medical file transfer, we are constrained by security requirements and regulations such that there is zero tolerance for security vulnerabilities both from a technological point of view and social point of view. Our solution is to enable people to leverage the blockchain for secure file transfer. SentIO is an API that abstracts the blockchain details away such that the implementation of our secure file storage and transfer system is simple and accessible to any client-side application.

SentiSage

Our capstone sponsor is PitchBook, a company that provides financial database and platform for Private Equity and Venture Capital professionals. While VC’s today have access to millions of data points, determining the hard-to-grasp “market sentiment” is still difficult. Various heuristics can be deployed to test sentiment, including financial news data. We built SentiSage, a working prototype which provides VC and PE professionals with sentiment analysis on news data and presents insights through visualizations and a user interface. Because of SentiSage, our users can better access the data points and trends they need when making crucial decisions in a volatile market.

Shelves

Shelves transforms KEXP's library of 70,000 vinyl and CD albums into a digital curation tool that preserves the sonic identity of the world's premier listener-supported radio station. It amplifies radio hosts’ abilities to craft creative broadcasts by augmenting the physical music library with tools for searching, organizing, and discovering music in the collection. In response to a musical landscape dominated by algorithmic suggestion, Shelves uses technology to aid KEXP in its mission to preserve “robot-free radio” and place human curation and connection back at the heart of the listener experience.

Shield

In 2015, Washington State Public Defenders were taking over 1000 cases a month and spending an inadequate 36 minutes per case. Current legal processes do not support the variety of clients defenders must serve, such as the low income populations where permanent residence affects legal information delivery. By automating reminders of critical dates and visualizing long-term history, our client-case management system, Shield , allows public defenders to focus on protecting the public interest without getting caught up in tedious workflows

STAGE: Simple Technology Assisting Genuine Expression

STAGE is the modern solution to an age-old practice in the arts - producing a show. UW’s Department of Dance currently employs an entirely paper-based system to manage their productions, resulting in unnecessary miscommunications and information redundancy. Our application solves these problems by allowing users to easily manage critical aspects of a production. Every dancer creates a profile, every choreographer can easily select their cast, and directors get a comprehensive look at every show. Our goal is to reduce the stress of scheduling and communication, and let artists focus on what really matters - getting their work on STAGE.
