The Emma B. Andrews Diaries: A Digital Humanities Project

The Emma B. Andrews Diary Project consists of 19 volumes of letters and diaries from the Golden Age of Egyptology (1889-1913). Built in Omeka, the website has not been updated since 2013, yet it has accrued a wealth of content. Our project set out to restructure the information architecture, redesign the metadata by creating linked relationships, and edited the custom theme to improve usability.

Travelroo: Discover, plan, and share your perfect trip itinerary

The current methodologies of planning travel are time-consuming, inefficient, and uninspired. To address this issue, our team created a unique web platform that fosters a community of travelers who are able to discover, plan, and share their perfect trip itineraries: Travelroo. Travelroo alleviates the pain points of travel, which will lead to memorable travel experiences and travel inspiration for our users. With the guidance and resources from the iSchool program, our team was able to produce a unique and much-needed trip planning solution in the crowded travel industry.

Where-able

For people with visual impairments, navigating the Seattle public transportation system without assistance is challenging due to the reliance on visual cues. With the help of Where-able, people with visual impairments are able to input their bus number and route so that the wearable vibrates when the bus is approaching, signaling the arrival of the bus. Our app and hardware enables users with visual impairments to be better supported when getting around the city of Seattle by eliminating one of the struggles of the public transportation system.

Airlift Northwest Elevate: Delivering lifesaving care, faster.

Elevate is a mission-critical, high-availability application for Airlift Northwest emergency flight nurses and pilots in Washington and Alaska. These professionals transport severely ill or injured patients by airplane and helicopter to reach lifesaving medical treatment. We bridge the communication gap between the dispatch center on the ground and flight crews in the air by displaying real-time mission status. Elevate ensures flight crews arrive at the right location with the equipment and information needed to immediately administer lifesaving patient care.

AMPR

We connect people in a meaningful way by taking online dating, offline. AMPR is for those who are tired of mindless swiping and superficial conversations. Our unique date generator plans dates for users based on mutual interests, first date preferences, and individual schedules so they can focus on developing meaningful relationships. We want users to use our product as a tool, not a crutch; that is why we welcome all users, whether they’re looking to meet someone new or discover local spots. Swipe less, date more.

Broadband Data for Communities and States - Analyze and Visualize

Disparities in Internet access among residents of the whole nation have been a serious problem in the States for decades. Unfortunately, even though there is public broadband data available, it’s hard to make sense of it. This project focuses on utilizing millions of records of broadband and census data to better serve communities across the United State. We created two new measurements for broadband deployment performance and built interactive dashboards and infographics to visualize the huge volume of data. Want to explore the broadband data in your area? Find out at https://fayechu.github.io/NTIA_Data_Visualization/frontend/index.html

Collaborator Comments

UW's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) publishes papers about disease research to improve population health. They gather feedback from a network of collaborators around the world, and each paper receives up to 5000 comments. We've built a streamlined system for managing comments. Our platform consolidates multiple applications into a central location that utilizes automation and intelligent triaging to process large sets of comment data quickly. IHME staff no longer need to look through thousands of comments and categorize every cell. We have built a magic button that, with just a click, reduces weeks of work into 30 seconds!

FAVR

FAVR aims to change the way volunteering works. Based in community instead of charity, FAVR provides low-time commitment volunteer opportunities while allowing users to easily give and receive favors from one another. FAVR seeks to empower all of its users, whether they are in need of assistance or lending a helping hand. Our simple application helps facilitate a connection between members, building a system based on trust instead of paperwork. It encourages volunteers with busier lives to get involved and help out in ways that their lifestyles allow. Through FAVR, users will feel more in control of their day-to-day routines.

HALP

Seeking online help shouldn’t be a chore. Websites like Yahoo Answers are antiquated, and even the modern apps that people turn to don’t provide adequate resources for seeking or providing help. Text alone isn’t sufficient to communicate problems. HALP solves this by allowing users to visually communicate the problem. Users can snap a photo from their phones, edit it in-app, and directly upload it to the topic board. Other users can share their expertise by providing photos of their own.
