MSIM Specializations

  1. Programs
  2. MSIM
  3. Specializations

The MSIM program offers six areas of specialization that are in high demand among employers: Business Intelligence, Data Science, User Experience, Information Consulting, Information Architecture, and Information Security. You may decide to select one of the specializations or you may combine electives that fit your career goals. Each specialization requires completion of three distinct courses.

Specialization classes offered in a Mid-Career-friendly schedule (evenings and weekends) are Data Science, Business Intelligence, and Information Security. Students will want to consult their appropriate degree plans as they explore specializations.

The Business Intelligence Specialization

Building analytical, managerial and baseline technical skills will help you learn to manage the process of transforming data into information. This specialization has a managerial/strategic focus, but also incorporates modern analytics and data warehousing toolsets to provide a foundational exposure to key technologies. Also available in evening/weekend format. For this specialization, students take the following three courses:

  • IMT 572 Introduction to Data Science (autumn, winter)
  • IMT 576 Foundations of Strategic and Managerial Business Intelligence (autumn, winter)
  • IMT 577 Business Intelligence Systems (winter, spring)

The Data Science Specialization

Students study the computational and quantitative analysis of large datasets to create information. Students completing this track will be able to use methods, tools and frameworks for analyzing and deriving insight from large-scale, heterogeneous data. Also available in evening/weekend format. For this specialization, students take the following three courses:

  • IMT 573 Data Science I: Theoretical Foundations (winter, autumn)
  • IMT 574 Data Science II: Machine Learning and Econometrics (spring, winter)
  • IMT 575 Data Science III: Scaling, Applications, and Ethics (spring, autumn)

Please be aware that some necessary background for Data Science & Analytics, such as R and Python, will need to be obtained from outside the MSIM program as they are not taught. Likewise, students will want to have obtained a background in Statistics as well.

The User Experience Specialization

Courses consider design, creation and evaluation of interactive information systems. You will be able to design, prototype and formally evaluate interactive information interfaces, systems and experiences from a user-centered perspective. Students interested in this specialization take the following three courses:

  • IMT 540 Design Methods for Interactive Systems (winter)
  • IMT 561 Visualization Design (spring) OR IMT 562 Interactive Information Visualization (winter)
  • IMT 565 Designing Information Experiences (spring)

After completion of the above courses, MSIM students will also have the opportunity in their second year to explore iSchool doctoral level courses in the field, such as INSC 543 Value Sensitive Design (winter).

Students are also encouraged to take electives from the participating DUB units (design: use: build:), of which the Information School is one.  DUB is the cross-campus alliance of units, faculty, and students working in the field of user experience, human-computer interaction, and design. Appropriate electives will be found especially in the following programs:

  • Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE)
  • Division of Design, School of Art (IXD)

Students should be aware that academic departments may limit the number of seats available to students outside their own programs. As such, space may be limited and the iSchool has no means to help students obtain seats in coursework taught in other programs.

The Information Consulting Specialization

Your studies will center on the knowledge and skills required to support organizations of all sizes and sectors in developing and managing strategic and operational information-related initiatives. Students in this specialization will take the following three courses:

  • IMT 585 Consulting Practices (winter)
  • IMT 541 Enterprise Systems Analysis and Design (spring)
  • IMT 587 Project Management (autumn, winter, spring)

Students are also encouraged to choose courses from these recommended electives:

  • IMT 556 Information and Operational Risk (winter)
  • IMT 557 Operational Risk Management in the Public and Private Sectors (spring)
  • LIS 583 Cross Cultural Approaches to Leadership (winter)

The Information Architecture Specialization

Focusing on the analysis and design of information structures for organizations and systems, you will gain skills in assessing existing information structures and creating new systems to effectively structure information. Students interested in this area should take the following three courses:

  • IMT 530 Organization of Information Resources (winter)
  • IMT 535 Introduction to Information Architecture (winter)
  • IMT 542 Information Structures Using XML (autumn, winter, spring)

Students are also encouraged to choose courses from these recommended electives:

  • IMT 539 Metadata Design (autumn)
  • IMT 536 Metadata for Interactive Media (autumn)
  • LIS 537 Construction of Indexing Languages (spring)
  • LIS 544 Information Retrieval Systems (spring)
  • IMT 563 Advanced Relational Database Management Systems (spring)

The Information Security Specialization

With a strong foundation in information/cyber security, focusing on the management and protection of information, students who complete this track will be able to effectively promote the quality, security and appropriate use of information assets. Currently, courses are listed as IMT 589 - Special Topics in Information Management until approval of course numbers. Also available in evening/weekend format. Students interested in this field should take the following three courses:

  • IMT 555  Foundations of Cybersecurity
  • IMT 558  Leading and Managing Enterprise Information Security
  • IMT 559  Cybersecurity Functions and Trends

Students are also encouraged to choose courses from these recommended electives:

  • IMT 556 Information & Operational Risk (winter)
  • IMT 557 Operational Risk Management in Public & Private Sectors (spring)
  • IMT 546 Data Communications & Networking (winter, spring)
