Which is the Safest Car for You? Deriving Safety Score from Real World Collision Data

Which car model is the safest while facing a car collision? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a popular car safety rating system based on crash tests in controlled environments, but how about a safety rating based on real world accident data? Provided with extensive vehicle collision records across the US, by VinAudit, we built a regression model to evaluate the vehicle safety for each vehicle make/model/year, and created a web application that allows people to look up and browse safety scores. We provide a brand new perspective for consumers who care car safety.

XLR8: Time-Tracking

Manufacturers are often overlooked in the development of new technologies. They rely on pen and paper to track data. Since factory operators are often working with their hands, it becomes invasive and time-consuming to write what work order they’re working on, when, where, and for how long. That’s why we’re bringing IoT to the factory floor, making technology work for them. Our project uses a two-pronged approach, with both a voice-based OS and mobile user interface to track data: to get the information they need, when they need it.

Zero

Food waste has always been a big issue and we all had the experience of cleaning expired food out of the fridge. And since U.S. labeling regulations don’t mandate an expiration date on most cosmetics, it is really tricky to determine its lifespan. The same wasting issue also goes to medications that are not common to go expired without being noticed. Zero was developed to help the user track and manage perishable products such as food, cosmetics, and medication. Our app would potentially assist users to reduce waste and save each user $120 per year from food and commodity waste.

Age Friendly Business

With the growth of Seattle's elderly population, there is a bigger need for businesses in the city to provide better care for their older employees and customers. Going to our website and taking our curated assessment tests, businesses and organizations can learn, self-reflect, and improve their work environments by applying supportive practices that fit the needs of older adults. Therefore, they can recognize what it means to provide age-friendly customer service and to be age-friendly employers. Everyone grows older, and the sooner we prepare for the future of our citizens, the greater our city can become.

ASLearn: Teaching children American Sign Language through interaction with the world around them

90% of deaf individuals are born to hearing parents. At home, these individuals face the challenge of learning or practicing American Sign Language (ASL) in an environment where those around them do not know it. ASLearn is a mobile learning aid designed to teach children ASL, all starting with the snap of a photo. From there, users have immediate access to the ASL translation of that object. With ASLearn, kids can have an engaging, personalized educational experience through interaction with the things right around them - making the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities more accessible one sign at a time.

BloodPact

Millions of people need a blood transfusion for lifesaving treatments each year. Yet, blood banks are often in short supply of blood due to a lack of donations. It is critical that there are enough resources available to provide patients with the care they deserve. Our project, BloodPact, empowers people to save lives through community, competition, and information. BloodPact is a web and text-messaging platform that gives new and returning blood donors the opportunity to join and compete across communities, set goals, earn rewards, and access important information about donation eligibility and blood drives.

But You Seem Fine

Our project focuses on the social side effects of having an invisible illness, specifically targeting adolescents. Currently, there is a lack of understanding and empathy between those with and without invisible illness. Our solution is an interactive visual novel where the player assumes the role of a young girl as she falls ill and follows her relationships through the ups and downs of the diagnosis process. Based on the user experience testing we have conducted, the game is well received and has proven effective in providing a platform to relate to the widely- shared experiences.

CubeRule, a Cyber Security Education Platform

Cube Rule is an AWS developer education program integrated with Security Innovation’s simulation platform, “CMD+CTRL”. Cloud technology has become extremely popular. But as technology becomes more advanced, so do hackers. Many developers don't learn about security until late in their careers, which leaves a wide opening for malicious actors. Cube Rule provides a gamified simulation for developers to look through a hacker's eyes and exploit AWS vulnerabilities. Developers of all skill-levels can utilize the program, as CMD+CTRL provides hints and a scoreboard. By teaching developers to defend their platforms, Cube Rule will create a safer future for everything online.

Drifting

College students face a wide range of stressful situations that can be difficult to navigate alone. Our web app, Drifting, provides guided exercises— for processing difficult emotions or providing encouragement— and a forum to see other’s thoughts for similar situations. Inspired by the concept of the message in the bottle, where people can anonymously release their secrets to the sea, we offer a safe place for students to confide in their troubles, to support each other, and to promote healthier mental wellbeing.

earlybird

Personal projects are the culmination of our intrinsic goals and desires but starting, working and completing them is difficult - we push them aside due to the lack of deadlines and consequences. Earlybird bridges the gap between intention and action by encouraging users to commit five minutes of work on their personal projects at a time and rewarding each commitment and additional time spent working on their project. The gamified experience coupled with mindfulness techniques to overcome procrastination barriers offers a unique solution that will help our users cultivate a habit of realizing their latest aspirations.
