Add Codes & Registration Policies

For information about add codes, retaking an INFO course, time conflicts and other registration policies, please view our registration policies webpage. 

General INFO Course Restrictions 

100 & 200 Level INFO Courses

Registration for 100- and 200-level INFO courses is generally open to all current UW undergraduates during Periods 1, 2 and 3. 

Certain sections of our 100- and 200-level courses may have add code restrictions and only available to newly admitted Informatics transfer student or First-Year Interest Groups (autumn/winter quarter only).

300 & 400 Level INFO Courses

Registration for 300- and 400-level INFO courses is open to Informatics majors only during Periods 1 and 2. Registration for these courses opens to all current UW undergraduates during Period 3. 

• For autumn & winter quarters only, 300- and 400-level INFO courses will open to newly admitted Informatics majors, in addition to current INFO majors, during Period 2. 
• For summer quarter only, all students are eligible to register for 300- and 400- level INFO courses during all periods.

Other INFO Course Restrictions

• INFO 280 (Professional Practices in Informatics) is the only 200-level course that is restricted to Informatics majors only.
• Capstone courses (INFO 490/491/492/493) and Internship in Informatics (INFO 495) are restricted for Informatics majors only for all periods.
• Experiential Learning courses such as Internship in Informatics (INFO 495) & Independent Studies (INFO 499), require a form submission to enroll.
• Some courses may be add code restricted due to time changes, course cancellation or reserved for certain populations. Please refer to the course’s additional details for more information.

Non-Major & Informatics Minor Student Registration

Non-major, prospective and Informatics minor students who are interested in enrolling into upper-division (300/400 level) Informatics courses may register for any available spots at the start of the quarter (for Autumn, Winter & Spring). It may be easier to secure a seat in an upper-division Informatics course during the summer, but summer course offerings are more limited. 

Interested in early enrollment into upper division INFO courses?

• Non-major & Informatics minors who are interested in enrolling into an upper-division INFO course prior to the start of Period 3 registration, please subscribe to seat notifications with Notify.UW. We may choose to open certain INFO courses or sections prior to the start of the quarter, and students who subscribe to Notify.UW will be notified by email when the selected INFO courses are open for registration.
• Exchange students coming to study at the UW and who are interested in taking Informatics classes should contact informatics@uw.edu for more information.

Informatics Minors

It can be challenging for Informatics minors to enroll in a 300- or 400-level INFO course. As a result, we cannot guarantee that all interested students will be able to complete enough courses to complete the Informatics minor. It is recommended that students only declare the minor with their academic advisor once they have completed a majority of course requirements and have the final requirements in progress. Informatics Major Student Registration

Informatics students get registration priority for upper division (300/400 level) INFO courses during period 1 and 2 registration. Lower-division courses are generally available to all students during all periods.

New Informatics Admits

Incoming first-year direct-to-major students and transfer students will register for classes during Advising & Orientation. The expectation is that direct-to-major students enroll in a First-Year Interest Group, including GEN ST 199, INFO 200, INFO 201, while transfer students enroll in a Transfer Success Cohort, including GEN ST 205, INFO 200, INFO 280.

Current UW Seattle students new to the major can register for courses during period 2 registration prior to the quarter that they begin the major. Current UW Seattle students new to the major are expected to enroll in INFO 280 for their first quarter in the program. Graduating Informatics Students

Graduating students may get additional graduating senior priority by applying to graduate up to 2 quarters before their intended graduation quarter. Seniors interested in obtaining this priority must submit an application to graduate before the deadline listed on the UW academic calendar. For questions about when to apply to graduate, please speak with your academic advisor or refer to the Informatics Graduation Policies for guidance. 

Registration FAQs

How do I enroll into a course that is full?

Once a course is full, we are unable to distribute an add code for the course. We suggest that students subscribe to Notify.UW to receive notifications when a space may be available. 

Please do not attend courses that you are not formally enrolled in. Many of our enrollment capacities are set to be the same as the room capacity. These capacities must be maintained to be aligned with fire safety codes.

I have a conflict with a class I need or want to take. What should I do?

A student who wishes to register for courses with time conflicts must follow the registration process outlined by the Office of University Registrar and fill out section 1 of the registration transaction form.

We suggest that students secure their spot in the course that they need for a graduation requirement or will fill first. Then you can submit a time conflict form for the other time conflict course. Keep in mind that all registration restrictions still apply when enrolling during this process.
