Seattle Health Information Management Association (SHIMA) Website

Our team developed a new website, sponsored by the non-profit organization, Seattle Health Information Management Association (SHIMA). This rebrand provides SHIMA the chance to offer new services, expand community outreach, and establish credibility amongst health informatics students and professionals, something they previously struggled with due to their outdated and disorganized website. We built the website from scratch utilizing React.js and Node.js, tailoring our tech stack with consideration to our client's low budget. We utilized free APIs and low-cost software tools, discussing the best options with SHIMA along the development journey, making for a heavily client-oriented project.

Service Stars - Helping the U-District shine by connecting volunteers and nonprofits

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, volunteering numbers have plummeted and never fully recovered, leaving nonprofits needing help. Addressing this issue, Service Stars is an online platform designed to bridge the gap between volunteers and non-profit organizations within the U-District community. Our platform offers organizations a hyperlocal and accessible platform to post volunteer opportunities while encouraging individuals to register and contribute their time and skills to causes they care about. Focusing on fostering deeper community engagement and providing accessible volunteering options, Service Stars aims to facilitate meaningful connections between volunteers and organizations in the U-District community.

Waza: Home-cooked Food Delivery

In India, young professionals often leave home in pursuit of their dreams. Cooking can feel like a chore after a long day of work, however, and no restaurant can replicate mom’s home-made flavors. Through our project, we created a digital platform that acts as a two-sided marketplace connecting home chefs to hungry customers. By integrating feedback from users on both sides, we created a prototype designed carefully for providing the best user experience to everyone involved. For customers, we provide a convenient mealtime option. For chefs, we provide a means for making a living. For everyone, we created a community.

What You Got Left? A recipe generation and ingredient tracking website to help minimize food waste.

In the US, young adults ages 18 to 24, waste more food than any other age group (Nikolaus et al., 2018); this stems from many factors including lack of time or ideas for cooking due to busy academic, work, and social schedules. What You Got Left? is an interactive website aimed to tackle food waste at an individual level. Users can input and share ingredients, track expiration dates, and generate diverse recipes. Through our recipe inventory and generation features, we hope to bring awareness to the ingredients we have at our disposal to eat healthier, reduce waste, and live sustainably.

3D Digitization Toolkit

The Covid-19 pandemic has shown the importance of making museum materials accessible to the public via the internet. While photographs are useful for this purpose, 3D models create unique opportunities to view objects from all angles. The goal for this project was to create an online toolkit that includes all the information a small cultural heritage institution needs to create 3D models of their objects and make them available online. In this way, cultural heritage institutions will be able to create more dynamic online exhibits, invite guests to see objects in new ways, preserve more fragile artifacts, and more.

BACtracker: Increasing Alcohol Health Literacy in Young Adults

Overuse of alcohol at a young age can lead to dangerous in-the-moment and long-term consequences. However, current legal restrictions and preventive approaches are not sufficient to reduce alcohol abuse; information gaps and misinformation regarding alcohol safety remain. To address this, we created BACtracker, an app providing easy-to-access information about alcohol and safe drinking practices to young adults, especially those within gender minorities. Featuring an extensive Information Hub and personalized Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Calculator, our app helps young adults make more informed, accurate decisions about alcohol consumption to keep them and their communities safe.
