Project Anemone

Starfish Space worked with our team to redesign their data platform. Starfish Space engineers and analysts interact with hundreds of files with many different data visualizations every day without a modern, easy-to-use platform to organize and navigate their data. Anemone is an updated data visualization platform enabling Starfish Space employees to read and analyze satellite mission data faster to support future satellite missions with more efficiency and customizability.

Prompty: Bridging Intergenerational Gaps One Prompt at a Time

Prompty is a platform designed to bridge the gap between generations of immigrant families who have become disconnected due to distance. It simplifies long-distance communication by offering prompts for sharing personal experiences, language, and traditions, thereby facilitating stronger connections between distant relatives. The platform serves as a central hub for storing family photos and videos, while also enabling the exchange of cherished memories, recipes, and songs. Psycare: Cultural Approach to Manage ADHD Symptoms

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common yet underdiagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders in the US. Research suggests that more than a million people are undiagnosed and untreated because of constraints such as time and money. Psycare provides free support to both diagnosed and undiagnosed ADHD patients by providing non-pharmaceutical interventions to improve anxiety, concentration, and restlessness. It adds a unique angle to the market by drawing upon traditional wisdoms of several Asian cultures and introduces these ancestral practices to a wider audience.

RDA/RDF Application Profile Design

The library cataloging communities are transitioning to the official Resource Description and Access (RDA) as their new standard for resource description. This project addresses the need for application profiles to facilitate the creation of well-formed RDA metadata. The focus is on designing a profile for describing print monographs and implementing new data models, entities, and elements introduced in the official RDA. The result is eight Sinopia resource templates and accompanying HTML guidance documents. This pioneering work will enable libraries to start creating RDA/RDF description sets and is expected to promote wider adoption of the official RDA.

Real-time Speech Emotion Detection

This project focuses on the development of conversational analytics and AI solutions for Seasalt.ai, aimed at analyzing real-world speech data for insights. Multiple Machine Learning models were implemented, with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) demonstrating the highest accuracy improvement of approximately 67%. The CNN model effectively identifies emotions from audio data clips, enhancing conversational analytics within Seasalt.ai's product SeaMeet. Extensive experiments and evaluations have been conducted to validate the effectiveness of the CNN-based approach, showcasing its potential for real-time applications such as affective computing, virtual assistants, and emotion-aware human-computer interaction.

reflect: a full-length smart mirror for pregnant and postpartum individuals

Experiences of dissatisfaction are a pervasive issue in today's society, however, there are few information solutions available that specifically address this within pregnant or postpartum individuals. Recognizing that negative body perception can cause significant distress to both the parent and their child, Team U has developed a solution that fundamentally prioritizes mental health and well-being: reflect. reflect is a full-body smart mirror that integrates daily check-ins, intention setting, breathing exercises, reflection time, and mirror exposure therapy. Our goal is to encourage users to slow down, cultivate healthier relationships with themselves, and ultimately, help improve their quality of life.

ResumAI: An AI career counselor chat bot that gives personalized resume feedback

ResumAI is a web based chat bot that helps job applicants overcome their resume challenges by giving them personalized feedback on their resumes and careers. Using the latest iteration of Chat GPT, ResumAI serves as a platform that facilitates and collaborates with the user resulting in improved resumes for all. We have addressed the bias, limitation, and accountability of ResumAI with an additional academic paper working with our sponsor Professor Chirag Shah. Team ResumAI has presented to the iSchool Founding Board representing the UW undergraduate capstone program, leveraging the capabilities of AI and providing personalized career guidance for job seekers.

Robert Garfias Film Collection @ the UW Ethnomusicology Archives

This project took digitized films of Robert Garfias (founder of the UW Ethnomusicology Archives) and made them accessible via the UW Ethnomusicology Archives and Internet Archive. This largely included cleaning up and working with the metadata, and creating standard filenames, all the while considering copyright and ethics of the films. While uploading films there was a deeper work with metadata, particularly with subject headings and material descriptions, and continuously learning about the processes of preserving and/or digitizing film.

Scarecrow Metadata Project

Scarecrow Video is a nonprofit video store and archive that houses over 145,000 titles. Scarecrow has been growing its collection for over 30 years, across various catalog system conversions, resulting in many inconsistencies and gaps in the catalog’s metadata. For our capstone project, we were responsible for checking and correcting metadata within the Sci-Fi and Japanese Horror genres. Ultimately, we verified metadata for over 600 titles. This updated metadata will increase the usability and searchability of Scarecrow’s catalog, and assist the transition into Scarecrow’s new web-based system that will be launched in the next few months.
