  5. Associate or Full Professor, Tenure Track, in Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Sovereignty (IDEAS)

The University of Washington Information School seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Full Professor level to also serve as the Associate Dean for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Sovereignty (IDEAS) for at least one 3-year term. Exceptional candidates at the Associate Professor level will also be considered and are encouraged to apply.

As an interdisciplinary unit, we encourage applications from candidates from broad backgrounds, with emphasis for this search in research, teaching, and service expertise and experience related to inclusion, diversity, equity, access, and sovereignty (IDEAS). This position will conduct research that engages with one or more of the University of Washington Information School’s strategic commitments to (1) promote equity in health and wellbeing, (2) encourage environmental sustainability and resilience, and (3) foster a more informed, just, and equitable democratic society. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach courses in their area of specialization within one or more of the Information School’s academic programs.

While serving as Associate Dean for IDEAS, the faculty member will carry out, track our progress on, and revise as needed, the IDEAS strategic plan to:

  1. Cultivate an accessible, inclusive and equitable climate

  2. Attract, retain and graduate a diverse and excellent student body

  3. Attract, retain, and promote diverse academic personnel

  4. Attract, retain, and promote a diverse staff, including positions of leadership

  5. Improve accountability, transparency and promotion of IDEAS work throughout the Information School

  6. Develop Place-Based education and engagement to advance IDEAS throughout the  Information School, UW and beyond

The Associate Dean supervises the staff within the Office of IDEAS, including the IDEAS Program Manager, the IDEAS Programs Advisor, and any student employees, who will assist in carrying out needed efforts as specified in the strategic plan.

This position will be expected to contribute to our diverse interdisciplinary environment that respects a wide variety of research traditions and methods, and demonstrates openness to new areas and methods.

The UW Information School is dedicated to hiring faculty who will enhance diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their research, teaching, and service. As information systems and institutions serve increasingly diverse and global constituencies, it is vital to understand the ways in which differences in gender, class, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, national and cultural boundaries, national origin, worldview, intellectual origin, ability, and other identities can both divide us and offer us better ways of thinking and working. The Information School faculty are committed to preparing professionals who work in an increasingly diverse and global society by promoting equity and justice for all individuals, actively working to eliminate barriers and obstacles created by institutional discrimination.

Our new colleague will join a broad-based, inclusive information school, whose faculty members pursue their scholarship, teaching, and service across multiple degree programs. The University of Washington is an institution that encourages inclusive research and community outreach, situated between the Puget Sound and Lake Washington, in the city of Seattle, on the traditional territories of the Coast Salish people. Seattle is a rapidly growing, dynamic, and diverse metropolitan area with a leading technology sector and vibrant civic sector.

The position is a full-time, 9-month tenure-track appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023. While the faculty member serves as Associate Dean, 3 summer months of salary will also be covered. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. Applicants may find further information about the Information School at ischool.uw.edu.

The base salary for the Associate Professor position will be $14,333 – $18,444 per month ($129,000 – $166,000 per 9-month academic year), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandate by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

The base salary for the Professor position will be $17,222 - $23,333 per month ($155,000 – $210,000 per 9-month academic year), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandate by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
