ConnectedLib, a new project by iSchool Assistant Professor Katie Davis, teams faculty members from library and information programs at the University of Washington and University of Maryland with public library partners to build librarians’ capacity to incorporate digital media into their work with youth to promote connections across their learning contexts.
The project is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and will support public librarians serving teens and, indirectly, young adult patrons who stand to benefit from librarians’ transformed practices.
“I’m honored to receive an IMLS Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program grant to create professional development resources for public librarians in the Seattle Public Library, Kitsap Regional Library, and Providence Public Library (Rhode Island) to leverage new media technologies in their work with youth to promote 21st century learning,” says Davis.
Davis’ project is one of 22 selected through a peer review process from applications through two IMLS grant programs. National Leadership Grants awarded six grants out of 108 eligible applications totaling $4,152,929. An additional $4,116,344 in non-federal spending will be leveraged. The Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program awarded 16 grants out of 100 eligible applicants totaling $5,155,279 and will be matched by an additional $2,415,910 in non-federal spending.
The Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program supports projects to recruit and educate the next generation of librarians, faculty, and library leaders; and to support early career research. It also assists in the professional development of librarians and library staff.
