The Library Journal calls Audrey Barbakoff, MLIS '10, a 'Ferry Godmother' for her role in starting and leading a book club on the Seattle to Bainbridge ferry commute. Barbakoff was named a 2013 Mover & Shaker along with 49 others from across the country. She was hired in 2011 as the Adult Services Librarian at the Bainbridge Island Library, part of the Kitsap Regional Library system.
Although the book club was highlighted by the Journal and has received local media attention, Barbakoff is credited with creating programs to increase the number of thirtysomethings who come to the Bainbridge Library. The library's typical clients were youth or 50-plus retirees and her job was to fill in the attendance gap.
According to her profile, Barbakoff added eight events a month to the library schedule, including a DIY series dubbed Radical Home Economics. Program attendance jumped dramatically, doubling to 600 adults in October 2012 from October 2011.
In addition to this honor, Barbakoff was named by the American Library Association as a 2013 Emerging Leader.
