Financial Aid & Scholarships

Financial Aid

All domestic applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for financial aid by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Question about financial aid or the FAFSA should be directed to the UW Financial Aid Office. Contact the UW Financial Aid Office at 206.543.6101 or osfa@uw.edu for information on additional types of aid to help support you as a student.

Residential MLIS Financial Aid

As part of an on-campus program, financial aid for Residential MLIS students may cover tuition, fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation, and miscellaneous fees. Financial aid is automatically assessed and awarded at 10 credits* for full-time programs.

Online MLIS Financial Aid

As part of an online/off-campus program, financial aid for Online MLIS students is limited to tuition only. Financial aid is automatically assessed and awarded at 5 credits* for part-time programs.

Law MLIS Financial Aid

As part of an on-campus program, financial aid for Law MLIS students may cover tuition, fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation, and miscellaneous fees.  Financial aid is automatically assessed and awarded at 10 credits* for full-time programs.

*Additional aid can be requested if additional credits are taken in a particular quarter. Fill out the Revision Request for Additional Expenses and submit to the UW Financial Aid Office.

iSchool Scholarships

All applicants who submit a complete MLIS program application by the priority deadline each year are automatically considered for an iSchool merit based scholarship. Each year, 10-15 scholarships are awarded, and may range from covering a quarter's worth of tuition costs to a year's worth or more.

We also award scholarships to continuing students, so there will be more opportunities to receive funding after you have started the program.

Graduate Assistantships and Student Employment

The iSchool hires students for graduate assistantships that provide partial tuition reimbursement. This hiring process occurs concurrently with the admissions process. When the GA positions are posted in February, all applicants will be notified via email. Questions about the GA hiring process should be directed to the iSchool HR department at iapply@uw.edu.

Students are also able to apply for hourly student positions at the iSchool and in other UW programs/departments:

While some funding and work opportunities are available, we always encourage applicants to plan to finance their entire education. Scholarship awards and GA hiring decisions are made shortly after applicants are notified of their admissions decision.
