Friday, February 6
5-7:30 p.m.: Welcome Event
At Walker Ames Room, Kane Hall
- Check-in and mingle with appetizers and drinks
- Welcome & opening remarks: Dean Anind K. Dey
- Keynote speaker: Kris Tomasovic Nelson, CFA, Global Head of Sustainable Investing and Senior Portfolio Manager at Russell Investments. Moderated by David Hendry, Associate Professor & MSIM Program Chair, Information School.
Topic: "Markets are information systems, and investing is decision-making under uncertainty. As climate risk rises and stakeholders demand greater accountability, investors are expanding the information set beyond traditional financial metrics to include sustainability-related signals that can shape long-term risk, return, and resilience. In this keynote, a UW MSIM alum and portfolio manager explains what sustainable investing is (and is not), how sustainability inputs differ from traditional data, and why challenges like lag, missing data, and inconsistent standards make measurement hard. You will leave with a practical mental model for sustainable investing and concrete ways information professionals can help make sustainability data reliable, comparable, and decision-grade in both corporate and investment roles." - Mingling with fellow students, alumni and industry professionals
