Heather Whiteman has the following news to share this week:
- She received a Fulbright Scholar Award which begins this June 2022. She will spend Summer 2022 and Winter 2023 quarters as a program director and will be designing, delivering, and standing up a master’s level specialization program in People Analytics (the first in Latin America) at Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala City.
- She was awarded a Global Innovation Fund Teaching award for this summer from the Global Affairs office of the University of Washington.
- Her symposium submission, “Applying Network Analysis to Rethink How We Work,” was accepted for inclusion in the 82nd Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management taking place in August 2022. She is the lead on the symposium but will be joined by Jeff Polzer of Harvard University, Noshir Contractor of Northwestern University, Keith McNulty of McKinsey, and Susan Biancanni of Netflix.
Marika Cifor’s book, Viral Cultures: Activist Archiving in the Age of AIDS, was published by University of Minnesota Press on May 17.
Marika Cifor also published an article with K.J. Rawson in Information, Communication & Society: Mediating Queer and Trans Pasts: The Homosaurus as Queer Information Activism, DOI: 10.1080/1369118X.2022.2072753. It is open access thanks to support from Research Services!
Jevin West is giving the plenary lecture for the PNW SIAM conference on Saturday, May 20. This is the bi-annual meeting for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in the Pacific Northwest that includes mathematicians from academia, industry, and national labs. He will talk about the use of mathematics and theory when designing interventions to misinformation and disinformation.
Chirag Shah gave an invited talk to Microsoft Research in Redmond last week titled, "Seeking Human-AI Synergy for Fair and Transparent Search and Recommender Systems.”
