Biography

Itza A. Carbajal is a US settler born in New Orleans and raised in Texas with a Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of Washington Information School. Carbajal now works as an assistant professor at the University of Washington iSchool focusing her research and pedagogy on children, memories, trauma, disaster education, archival praxis, and youth records. Previously, she received a Master of Science in Information Studies with a focus on archival management and digital records from the University of Texas at Austin School of Information. As a professional, she has worked as a Latin American Metadata Librarian at UT Austin, as Digital Archivist for Loyola New Orleans, cultural arts programmer in San Antonio, and youth education instructor and designer in Seattle. Through social-historical and affective frameworks, Carbajal stresses the role of historic and contemporary records in shaping personal and collective memories for young populations through K-16 learning with a special focus on disaster and climate change education.
