Microlearning Trainings Designed for the Modern Work Environment

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) offers free continuing education and training opportunities related to consumer health. Unfortunately, the demands of the modern work environment make it difficult for library staff to dedicate time to these opportunities. This has left many libraries unaware of, or untrained in, numerous free high quality health resources that can be passed on to the public. To address the problem of time, this project reconfigured the information session for the NIH Senior Health Website. The session was transformed into a “microlearning” module, with 6 short video tutorials that have small amounts of content.

Moving a Medical Library

The Swedish Medical Center Library will be moving to a new and smaller location, due to the demolition of a portion of the 747 Broadway Building. The goal of this Capstone project was to drastically downsize the library’s physical collections, as the new library space will be decreasing by 75%. Determinations were made to either keep or discard journals, textbooks, and microfiche based on the needs of the medical community.

Noonum Sentiment Analysis

Understand relationships between stock movement and social media sentiment in the company's Twitter posts is appealing and catching attentions of both academic and industrial researchers  nowaday. One of the factors preventing their analysis from great accuracy is the quality of the text data and how to mine it. Our team want to examine some of current models (Logistics, Naïve Bayes and CNN) to mine text data, specifically for enterprises’ tweets. Our research question is: To mine data from companies’ tweets in Twitter, which one is the best method to build a tweet sentiment analysis model with limited supervised data?

Offering Computer Classes at Derby Public Library

The Derby Public Library is a suburb of Wichita, Kansas with a population of 23,000 with a growing interest in technology classes. There are few options nearby for computer literacy training, especially training that is free. Crystal Prieb worked with the library to figure out what classes their patrons were most interested in, then spent several months presenting those classes. Eight classes were offered in total with class sizes ranging from one to ten and topics including “Introduction to Microsoft Excel” and “Library Databases and Resources”.

Opening Up the Data: Visualizing the effectiveness of Puget Sound restoration efforts

Interoperability, dispersed data, and inconsistent data formats are common issues across information science. This Open Data Literacy (ODL) Capstone tackles these issues in the realm of environmental restoration. Numerous restoration projects have been undertaken throughout the Puget Sound, but connecting investments in these projects to co-located indicators of habitat viability is challenging. Our team leveraged open, found data and open-source tools to build a scalable, sustainable data processing pipeline and an interactive, web-based visualization prototype. This helps our partners better tell the story of Puget Sound restoration efforts and demonstrates that open-source tools can help data curators meet open-data needs.

Oregon Humane Society: Standard Operating Procedures

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are vitally important in any organization. They quickly explain what to do in almost any situation that arises. In animal shelters time is of the essence, especially when animals arrive that are neglected or injured, or families are ready to adopt their newest family member. This project consists of creating a new SOPs manual for the Oregon Humane Society for the on-site animal hospital in manual form and in local software. This project will continue through the year to include SOPs manuals for the animal shelter, and the investigations department and also manuals created in local software.

Pouncing on the Purrfect Database

Specialty Purebred Cat Rescue (SPCR), a nonprofit founded in 1999, is the largest rescue of its kind operating out of the Midwest region of the US. It has a great need for a remotely hosted rescue management software which can be accessed via the internet. After discontinuing its use of a shelter management database in 2015, data recovery was nonexistent. Additionally, SPCR currently does not capture microchip data nor adopter data in electronic form. The Capstone’s agenda was to test several shelter databases, provide a recommendation, develop a metadata guide, and assist with the implementation of the shelter management software.

Preserving the Institutional History of OMSI

The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) is a large, non-profit museum located in the city of Portland Oregon that started has a simple city hall exhibition and now serves over 1 million visitors. There were three primary objectives driving the “Preserving the Institutional History of OMSI” project: to arrange and describe, increase access, and plan for future success. Accomplishing these goals has created the organizational structure of a successfully functioning archive and set the museum on a path to making its archival material available to the external community.

Primo Usability Study

Since launching in Fall 2015 as the University of Washington Libraries’ main discovery system, Ex Libris Primo has not been subjected to formal usability testing. Additionally, the UW Triennial Survey showed high dissatisfaction and negative feedback from students, faculty, and staff regarding the current library search experience. To improve their experience using the UW Libraries Search, we conducted user testing, analyzed the data, and provided design recommendations for implementation before the release of the newest iteration of Primo (Fall 2017). Our hope is for these recommendations to make a more user-friendly search system for UW library users.
