Karen Fisher and collaborators Kate Starbird, Jevin West, Reem Talhouk (Newcastle University, Open Lab), and Eiad Yafi (University of Kuala Lumpur) were just awarded $50,000 from Facebook Crisis Informatics Research Awards. Their proposal, “Data & Design Methods for Supporting Crisis Informatics in Conflict Zones” was one of three selected for funding. Congratulations, Karen!
Jevin West and his colleague, Carl Bergstrom, gave the UW Public Lecture in Kane 130 on Wednesday, Nov. 7. This was a lecture for the Graduate School Public Lecture Series on BUNK: The Information Series. Their lecture reached capacity and was recommended by Seattle’s alt-weekly The Stranger as one of its recommended events of the week.
Hans Jochen Scholl served as a senior faculty advisor at the Doctoral Colloquium at the ISCRAM Asia Pacific conference in Wellington, New Zealand. As the lead author he also presented a full-research paper titled, "Communications and Technology Challenges to Situational Awareness: Insights from the CR16 Exercise,” which was co-authored by graduate student Karyn Hubbell (MLIS) and Jeffrey Gene Leonard (MSIM alumnus.) The paper was nominated for a best-paper award.
