Jason Yip received a Google Faculty Research Award! He and Julie Kientz of the UW HCDE were awarded $60,000 to study "Designing for Inclusive Joint Media Engagement." Congratulations, Jason!
Michelle Martin has lots of terrific news to share:
- At the Association of Library and Information Science Education Conference (ALISE) she presented the following Youth Services SIG Presentation: Expanding Literacies Across the LIS Education Universe, along with Kathleen Campana and Liz Mills.
- ALISE also accepted their poster titled, Neighborhood Walks and Community Talks: A Research Study of Public Library Family Outreach Strategies & Challenges, to its Works in Progress Poster Showcase. ALISE ’18 took place in Denver, Colorado from February 6th to 9th.
- She gave a public talk at Willard Public Library in Battle Creek, Michigan on February 15th titled, Brown Gold: African American Children’s Literature as A Genre of Resistance. The event was jointly sponsored by Willard Library and Kellogg Community College.
- Also in Battle Creek, Michigan she participated in the following three Black History Month school performances: Dudley Elementary (K-2, 199 students), LaMora Park Elementary (K-2, 214 students), and Harvest Learning Preschool (4 year olds, 18 students).
- She was invited to give the annual Francelia Butler Lecture to the Children’s Literature Association in Indianapolis, Indiana in June 2019. This lecture (similar to a Lifetime Achievement Award for the Association) honors service to the profession and comes with an honorarium, conference registration, flight to the conference and accommodations.
- She was appointed as the Information School’s MLIS Chair for 2018 to 2021.
- She was appointed Adjunct Faculty in the College of Education from September 2018 to June 2019, renewable annually.
- She was appointed to the Children’s Literature Association Nominating Committee for 2018 to 2021.
- She is in the process of submitting a proposal to host the 2020 Children’s Literature Association Conference in Seattle. Typically, 350 scholars attend.
