Adam Moore presented two papers at the 7th Annual Weekend Exploring Liberty at the University of Illinois in Springfield from November 30th – December 3rd, 2017.
- “Privacy, Security, and Liberty” explored the limits of security-based arguments for restricting individual privacy and liberty.
- “Intellectual Property, Liberty, and the Prisoner’s Dilemma” centered on the liberty enhancing features of copyright, patent, and trade secret instructions.
- This paper was also accepted for publication at the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal. In recent surveys The Fordham IPLJ was ranked the #1 law journal in arts and entertainment law and #3 in intellectual property law.
- Adam has also been asked to give a Keynote Presentation at the 16th annual Information Ethics Roundtable (IER) in Copenhagen, May 17th-18th 2018. The title of his presentation is “Privacy, Security, and Surveillance: Big Data and the New Accountability.”
Anna Hoffmann and Jevin West gave talks at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington D.C. for the Roundtable on Data Science Postsecondary Education: Integrating Ethics and Privacy Concerns into Data Science Education. This meeting brought together data scientists and educators to discuss how to discuss topics, strategies, and approaches to integrating ethics and privacy concerns into data science education.
- The title of Anna’s talk was “What We Really Talk About When We Talk About Ethics: Navigating History, Privilege, and Power in Information and Data Science.”
- The title of Jevin’s talk was “Calling B.S. in the Age of Data Science Euphoria.”
Anna Hoffman also traveled to Los Angeles where she spoke at the following events:
- The UCLA Information Studies Department 2017-2018 Colloquium Series where she spoke on her work on Data Violence as a part of the UCLA Information Studies.
- UCLA’s All Things in Moderation conference on the people, practices and politics of human and machine online content moderation that took place December 6th and 7th. She participated in the panel “Confronting Bias in Automated Content Moderation: Discursive, Technical, and Political Opportunities for Change.”

- He had a short voice cameo on the podcast RadioLab on November 23rd for his work on the reproducibility crisis in science.
- He gave a talk for the League of Women Voters titled, "Calling BS in the Age of Misinformation." The event was held in Seattle at Benaroya Hall.
- Finally, along with Jason Portenoy and Jessica Hullman he had a paper accepted this week in Frontiers in Research Metrics and Analytics titled, Leveraging Citation Networks to Visualize Scholarly Influence Over Time.

Lily Rajan had a paper accepted for ISKO 2018 titled, "Historical Ambiguity: A Lens for Approaching Outdated Terms."
Wan-Chen Lee had a paper accepted to ISKO 2018 titled, “Author Information for Knowledge Organization in the Digital Age.”
Jaime Teevan (Affiliate Associate Professor) was featured in the first-ever Microsoft Research podcast. In the podcast she detailed her work looking into productivity, including methods for getting more done in a day.
