- As part of his work with Data Responsibly, he was interviewed by MetroLab’s Executive Director Ben Levine for the govtech.com article titled University Researchers Use 'Fake' Data for Social Good. He, along with Julia Stoyanovich from Drexel University talked about their work generating synthetic datasets.
- He gave the keynote talk at the UrbanGIS 2017 Third International Workshop on Smart Cities and Urban Analytics titled Techniques and Technologies for Responsible Urban Data Science.
- He also gave a talk at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute at the University of Utah where he spoke about Viziometrics.
The VIEWS2 research team's second lead paper, "Early literacy in library storytimes Part 2: A quasi-experimental study and intervention with children’s storytime providers," has been been named the winner of the ALISE/Bohdan S. Wynar Research Paper Competition. They will accept this award and present a summary of the paper at ALISE 2018 in Denver, Colorado in February. The citation for the forthcoming paper: Mills, J. Quinn DuPont spoke at the University of California, Irvine Cybersecurity Policy & Research Institute’s Using Blockchain to Secure the Supply Chain conference. His talk, along with Bill Maurer, was titled What is the blockchain, anyway?
Negin Dahya contributed to the News and Views section of Promising Practices in Refugee Education. Her piece was titled A Socio-Technical Approach to Refugee Education.
Annie Searle spoke at the SecureWorld Seattle conference. Her talk titled A Global Cybersecurity Policy That Crosses Borders highlighted her work with the UW Jackson School. Batya Friedman, Ryan Calo, and Tadayoshi Kohno received a renewable grant for $200K from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to support their on-going work at the UW Tech Policy Lab through cutting-edge research, fostering conversation and innovation, and inclusive tech policy.
Batya Friedman will serve a three-year term as Chair of the SIGCHI Social Impact Award Selection Committee.
Ph.D. graduate Rachel Ivy Clarke has been selected as the winner for the 2018 ALISE/The Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Competition.
