Biography

Susan Hildreth is the iSchool’s first Distinguished Practitioner in Residence, a position that focuses on the future of public libraries and is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

At the iSchool, Susan develops curriculum, teaches courses, and conducts research on the future of libraries. She also serves on the MLIS program committee and the advisory committee for the iSchool’s Technology and Social Change Group (TASCHA), a partner in the Gates Foundation’s Global Libraries Initiative.

Prior to her arrival at UW, Susan was appointed by President Obama to serve a four-year term as the director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the main source of federal funding for museums and libraries in the United States. In that role, she administered a $250 million annual budget and advised the Obama administration and Congress on information policy. Hildreth also has seen real change and growing challenges for libraries while leading the San Francisco Public Library in the early 2000s, the California State Library from 2004 to 2009, and The Seattle Public Library from 2009 to early 2011.
