Nuts and Bolts of Scholarly Publishing Workshop Series

Although most scholars must ‘publish or perish,’ graduate students and junior faculty members often receive minimal guidance on the publication process beyond ad hoc support from advisors. To provide a formal channel through which researchers can gain confidence in approaching scholarly publishing, we developed a workshop series to provide guidance around publication of an article in an academic journal. Two complementary workshops, one focused on journal selection and the other on publishing agreements, introduce open access and authors’ rights concepts while addressing common concerns and offering practical advice for navigating the publishing process from start to finish.

Student Records Retention and Digitization Project

Since 1988, DigiPen Institute of Technology has relied heavily on paper-based student records with minimal disposition and digitization taking place. The institution has a solitary filing room shared by numerous administrative departments, which has reached maximum capacity. To address this issue, I compiled 1) a detailed file retention audit based on current practices, legal requirements, and industry best-practices and 2) a proposal, including quotes from off-site storage, mobile high-density shelving, and document digitization vendors. It is my hope this information will lead to more efficient use of space and eventually improve employee workflows by making files more accessible.

Uncovering Gaps in Vaccination Coverage

It is estimated that only 86% of children worldwide receive the complete three doses of major vaccines, despite global coverage. Identifying data gaps in vaccination coverage will deepen understanding of the barriers for these left-out communities and ultimately support better vaccination access around the world. This project models vaccination recall, caregiver provided data used when a child’s vaccination card is not available. Recall is only 53% accurate, yet UNICEF vaccination coverage statistics are calculated using this unreliable data. We use machine-learning techniques to model conditions of caregivers without cards, supporting card loss prevention and more accurate vaccination coverage data.

Center on Contemporary Art Archives Digitization

Our Capstone team processed, prepared for accession, and digitized much of CoCA’s remaining and untouched video-audio content. For months, we worked to inventory, catalogue, and preserve digitized content according to CoCA’s finding aid resources and future needs. This content will be preserved internally on CoCA’s private server/cloud storage system. In troubleshooting such uncharted territory, our team researched digital preservation and future best practices for ongoing digitization work. This directly impacted our final written assessment and review on our work, in which we highlighted future suggestions for digital storage/best practices, and digital preservation frameworks for future iSchool CoCA interns.

Dance Library Sustainable Policies Project

The California Ballet Company Library has been in progress for many years. Donations of books and magazines have been collected since the 1950’s. The quantity and diversity of the materials amassed demanded organization. A collection development policy, as well as a best practices cataloging document were definitely needed. Consultation with the stakeholders from CBC and research into the professional literature was undertaken. A mission statement, a vision statement, as well as guidelines on how to build the library, in order to meet that vision, were crafted and incorporated. These documents will shape the library and ensure its longevity and usefulness.

Finding their way: an information guide for new refugees in Southern Nevada

Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada (CCSN) is a nonprofit social services provider that serves individuals and families in need in the Las Vegas area, including over 3,000 refugees each year. Although information for refugees is freely available online, this information is not beneficial to individuals with limited English language proficiency or digital literacy. In partnership with CCSN, we created a physical informational resource guide for refugees located in Southern Nevada, which can be updated and translated by resettlement organizations across the country.

FlourishOA: Discover Your Open Access Options

Open Access (OA) publications allow for anyone to access research information free of charge. It is difficult for researchers to discover which OA publications exist, and the price to publish. We designed and implemented a data-driven web app and API enabling researchers to discover relevant and reputable OA publications to maximize publishing impact. We aggregated price information and journal impact data. Our goal is to provide the OA community with the tools they need to separate legitimate OA publications from unethical publishers. We believe transparency in the market will produce downward price pressure, further lowering economic barriers to publishing.

IC^3

With the increase in internet connected devices, the number of unprotected and compromised devices is on the rise. While many corporations can afford security systems, homeowners and small businesses are left with traditional host-based antivirus that is limited to specific devices and operating systems. IC3 represents a prototype of a consumer-grade network intrusion detection system, providing users with enterprise-grade network security at an affordable cost and entry-level technical capability requirements. IC3 comes in the form of a router, with a built-in web interface for accessing detections and steps on how to remediate them.

Implementing Cultural Humility Training at The Seattle Public Library

The Seattle Public Library provides K-12 students with after-school Homework Help sessions in science, mathematics, social studies, and English. Homework Help is run by volunteers, who receive training in pedagogy, but do not receive the support necessary to support a diverse student population. In developing and delivering training in cultural humility, we invite volunteers to examine the wider impact they have on their students, and how students use libraries. With our encouragement, volunteers examine their own biases and privilege, and are better equipped to create a learning environment that is more equitable and inclusive for students of all cultures.

Improving Access to Information from the Washington Health Benefit Exchange

Accessible design improves websites for everyone. Yet many websites do not yet follow these principles, creating a barrier for people with sensory, motor, cognitive and other disabilities. The Washington Health Benefit Exchange (WAHBE) wants to create specific policies and procedures to ensure such accessibility, which federal law requires. This project kickstarts their policy work, by pulling together an online resource guide of standards, toolkits, models and best practices. The guide can be updated and shared, and reflects scholarly and popular literature, practices and expertise from national and international sources.
