Exploring the Usability of Online Collections

The usability of online collections is predicated on their information architecture and the quality of user experience design. Institutions investing in digitizing collections are dually tasked with creating an online experience that intuitively facilitates casual and curated browsing, search features, and logical connections to relevant content. Utilizing qualitative research methods - structured interviews, usability tests, affinity mapping, etc. - this work sought to discover the challenges faced by cultural institutions who provide online collections, and how those collections might be experienced by lay users. The resulting identified trends indicate an industry-wide need for improved user experience design and information architecture.

FAVR

FAVR aims to change the way volunteering works. Based in community instead of charity, FAVR provides low-time commitment volunteer opportunities while allowing users to easily give and receive favors from one another. FAVR seeks to empower all of its users, whether they are in need of assistance or lending a helping hand. Our simple application helps facilitate a connection between members, building a system based on trust instead of paperwork. It encourages volunteers with busier lives to get involved and help out in ways that their lifestyles allow. Through FAVR, users will feel more in control of their day-to-day routines.

HERE to THERE

At large events, trying to describe a booth location to someone is frustrating and tiring. THERE is our solution - an indoor wayfinding mobile and desktop application for event attendees and planners respectively. THERE easily gets attendees from point A to point B so they can fully enjoy their experience without worrying about getting lost at large events. Creating booth locations online makes event planning simple. Building on HERE Technologies, we navigate complicated indoor spaces for you - to help you get from HERE to THERE.

Mimo - An Ambient Voice Assistant Crafted for Older Adults

The population of older adults in America is increasing faster than ever, and over 90% of them are choosing to live alone. Getting older and living alone contribute to creating significant health and technical barriers. Mimo adds an ambient personal assistant to their lives that they can always talk to. Mimo creates an environment of companionship and empowers people to do more with their voice, like understanding their health, being informed about their schedule, and harnessing key skills to enrich their life. Created with love using a RaspberryPi, Amazon Alexa, and a display that enhances your voice first experience.

NextBite

Farmers markets often have produce at the end of the day that cannot be sold, either due to visual imperfections or overproduction, which contributes to food waste. Volunteers from non-profit organizations rescue food from farmers markets, but this process is inconsistent due to ineffective communication between volunteers and vendors. NextBite is a mobile application that streamlines the donation process by allowing vendors to create donation listings to inform volunteers about the availability of surplus food. Volunteers can then rescue and redistribute these donations to non-profit organizations in the Seattle area.

SafiStation Disinfectant Generator Dashboard - Impact

PATH and MSR® Global Health developed the SafiStation™, an innovative and easy-to-use device that generates chlorine for infection prevention and water treatment in low-resource health care facilities. PATH is preparing to conduct a field test of up to 50 SafiStation devices across three countries to evaluate device performance, impact, and usability. We created a web-based dashboard to combine data automatically collected by the device with digital surveys in order to visualize chlorine production and cost savings. The dashboard will help PATH efficiently and effectively monitor the device in the field and make conclusions about the best market for the SafiStation.

We created an integrated web-based data dashboard to automatically collect and visualize technical performance data collected directly from the device using cellular networks. The dashboard will give PATH and MSR access to real-time performance and functionality data to monitor device usage and identify challenges with the technical performance.
