Fundraising Platform for Global Health

Do you support global health causes? Do you have a passion for the outdoors? Mountain Safety Research Global Health (MSR GH), a nonprofit organization, wants to engage outdoor enthusiasts by allowing them to use their outdoor adventures to fundraise towards the organization’s global health initiatives. Our team has developed a dedicated fundraising platform to accomplish this. With our platform, outdoor enthusiasts can make a difference through their passion while MSR GH can use the proceeds to increase access to life necessities for people who are living on less than $5 a day.

Goya

Goya is a location driven social media application that lets users experience social network posts in person. Our project improves upon the social media experience by making it more real to a user. Posts on goya can be seen on a map, giving users a way to contextualize social media posts and relate to their community. Users are encouraged to visit posts in person by receiving points upon check-in; these points are akin to karma on reddit. The functionality of goya not only encourages community participation but also entices users to be more active and see the world around them.

Gradient: Crowdsourced Street Parking Finder

Finding parking in busy cities is stressful. Out of a sample of drivers in Seattle, 83% stated that they prefer public street parking to paid garages or lots, citing the significantly lower cost-per-hour and proximity to their intended destination. However, repeatedly circling an area for parking creates anxiety, increases traffic congestion, and pollutes the environment; consuming both time and gas. Gradient aims to streamline the street parking experience by leveraging civic parking data, crowdsourced user-input, and machine learning to predict the availability of nearby public street parking in real-time.

GradScout - Find your perfect graduate programs

Finding the right graduate program that fits your requirements is an arduous task. Information is often scattered across different portals, inconsistent and confusing. Research showed that over 80% of graduate students encountered difficulties in choosing the right programs. GradScout is an innovative, user-friendly web application, which provides aspiring graduate students a platform to identify the programs that best meet their needs. Our intelligent algorithm recommends these programs based on areas of interest, budget, location and other criteria. With around 2 million graduate applications annually, GradScout aims to help applicants find their perfect graduate program and embark on a successful journey.

HealthNuts - Envision Nutrition

National surveys show the majority of Americans have used an app to track anything related to their health. Unfortunately, almost half of those users have deleted those apps due to lost interest or time wasted entering data. Using Clarifai, an established machine vision company, HealthNuts has created a mobile friendly web application that allows people to simply take a picture of the foods they eat to record and display the nutrients they receive. This avoids the time and effort required for tracking this information by hand and creates a fun and unique experience to help people reach their nutritional goals.

Kosmos

The problem we addressed was that many cosmetics have unsafe ingredients in them and the prolonged use of expired or unsafe products can be harmful for users. Twelve cosmetics are used by the average woman every day, and only one out of seven cosmetics are considered entirely safe. We created a cosmetics tracking system that organizes the user’s cosmetics and tracks the expiration dates, safety of ingredients, and any conflicting allergies to help the user be more health conscious with their cosmetics. Our app makes a difference by leading cosmetic users to use safer products.

Phish Somewhere Else!: Phishing Awareness Learning Module

Our capstone project addresses the issue of improving phishing awareness among employees at UW Medicine. The project consisted of three phases: i) Designing and sending bait phishing emails targeting new employees who just completed their orientation (which included a presentation on phishing, and a warning that they would be phished), ii) Sending out a questionnaire to those employees asking why they did or did not click on the bait phishing email, iii) Designing and drafting a short, interactive, and engaging learning module to educate employees on how to identify phishing emails.

PicFix

This winter, Seattle experienced an unprecedented volume of potholes, graffiti, and abandoned vehicles, among other symptoms of a rapidly growing city. These issues typically go ignored and unreported because people don’t know how to report them or are off-put by the large and unintuitive forms. PicFix aims to revolutionize the reporting process by utilizing computer vision and form auto-filling to make reporting problems as easy as taking a picture. Nearly all data required for the report is pulled from the photo to create a faster, simpler experience for the user. Smart images: worth more than a thousand words.

Playground

Our team aims to solve the problem that many parents are very busy at work, so that their children are not receiving enough guidance and companionship. We developed an Android educational game application that allows parents to have a safe mind to let their 6 to 8 years old kids play independently while providing children a fun and engaging game to play with. Parents can select learning objectives from a list of soft skills for their kids to learn and track kids’ playing progress. Children can learn the skills while building their own story and playing mini games.
