Registration time frames

The registration period typically begins mid-quarter (approximately, 7-10 weeks prior to the start of the next quarter). Refer to the UW Academic Calendar and look at the dates for Registration Periods 1, 2, 3, as well as relevant add/drop dates.

Mode Acronyms

  • Students are sorted into registration groups according to the mode of the program they are in (online, residential, or law librarian).
  • Here is a key to the acronyms that are used:
    • LIS X = Online MLIS students
    • LIS R = Residential MLIS Students
    • LIS J, K, L = Law Librarianship MLIS Students
    • INFORM college = The Information School
  • For example: in the notes section of a class, if it says “LIS X majors only in period 1,” only online students can register for the class during period one. And vice versa for LIS R.

Registration: other considerations

  • For completing an independent study, please submit the LIS 600 - Independent Study Proposal Form via Canvas.
  • If you are interested in taking courses outside of the iSchool, contact that instructor and specific department directly. To have the credit applied to your MLIS degree, please submit the Out-of-School Course Approval Form prior to registering for the course. Up to 21 credits may be taken from other UW programs.
    • You do not need to complete this form for INFO, IMT,  and INSC courses.
    • Museology, HCDE, and Graduate Certificate in Textual and Digital Studies courses are pre-approved and will automatically count towards the MLIS degree (no request is needed). Please notify program staff at mlis@uw.edu if you enroll in a course so your degree audit can be updated to count these classes as electives.
  • MLIS students are limited to 6 credits of transfer courses from another institution to apply toward their degree. To request the review of transfer credits, please submit the Transfer Credit Request Form
  • Some iSchool classes may require add or faculty codes; please consult the iSchool student services office for codes.
  • Withdrawing from a course? See UW Professional and Continuing Education website for procedure information. A tip to also check with the UW Financial Aid Office to determine how dropping a course may affect your aid.
  • To maintain student status, you must register for classes in autumn, winter and spring quarter. Students in good academic standing can request a leave of absence (a quarter at a time). See the Graduate On-Leave Status page from the Graduate School, and current MLIS students can find an outline of the on-leave process in the MLIS Student Resource Center.

Payments

As a student in a fee-based degree program managed by UW Continuum College/UW Professional & Continuing Education (UW PCE), you can pay your course and program fees online using the MyUW portal. For payment deadlines, see the UW Academic Calendar for your year of study.

Remember, before paying, you'll need to register for your courses. PCE provides an overview of the various Payment Procedures for Fee-Based Degree Students, depending on your payment method.

Note: All emails about registration and payments will be sent to your UW email address.

What to do if a course is closed (full)

If a course or course section that you are interested in is full, sign up for a notification via Notify.UW! You can elect to receive a notification when a section opens or closes.
