University of Washington doctoral students receive funding from numerous sources to help finance their education and support their research efforts. Select awards conferred on iSchool Ph.D. students in recent years include:

2024

  • Zhuohao (Jerry) Zhang, Apple Scholar in AI/ML, Apple, Inc.: Funding for 2 years, covering tuition, fees and a $40,000 stipend; $5,000 annual travel stipend; connection with an Apple research mentor; opportunities to intern at Apple.

2023

  • Jesse Brisbois, Health Policy Research Scholars Program, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, led by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health: four years of support including an annual funding award of $30,000, a mentorship program for newer cohort members and opportunities to take courses provided by the program on topics like public policy and navigating academia.

  • Amelia Lee Dogan, GSEE Graduate Excellence Award, University of Washington Graduate School: 2 years of tuition, benefits and a monthly stipend.
  • Amelia Lee Dogan, Graduate Research Fellowship, National Science Foundation: five year fellowship with three years of financial support including an annual stipend and cost-of-education allowance totaling $159,000.
  • Megumi Kivuva, Graduate Research Fellowship, National Science Foundation: three years of Ph.D. funding, including a $37,000 annual stipend, to be used over five years.
  • Claire Mitchell, Graduate Research Fellowship, National Science Foundation: five year fellowship with three years of financial support including an annual stipend and cost-of-education allowance totaling $159,000.
  • Xuhai "Orson" Xu, Distinguished Dissertation Award in Mathematics, Physical Sciences & Engineering, University of Washington Graduate School: $1,000 honorarium.

2022

  • Tessa Campbell, Spectrum Doctoral Fellowship — Catalysts for Change, American Library Association: tuition support, stipend, participation in specialized coursework.

  • Rachel Franz, AI for Accessibility PhD fellowship, Apple Scholars in AI/ML: two years of funding, internship opportunities, and a two-year mentorship with an Apple researcher.
