AAUWAmerican Fellowships

American Fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence, teaching experience, and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research.

Amount: $6,000-30,000
Approximate Deadline: Mid-November
Eligibility: Women doctoral candidates

American Educational Research Association

The program seeks to stimulate research on U.S. education issues using data from the large-scale, national and international data sets supported by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), NSF, and other federal agencies, and to increase the number of education researchers using these data sets. The program supports research projects that are quantitative in nature, include the analysis of existing data from NCES, NSF or other federal agencies, and have U.S. education policy relevance.

Amount: Up to $20,000
Approximate Deadline: Multiple Deadlines
Eligibility: U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or non-U.S. citizens and must be working at a U.S. institution. Applicants should be advanced doctoral students at the dissertation writing stage. Underrepresented minority researchers are strongly encouraged to apply.

AT&T Labs Fellowship

Fellowships and grants are available to outstanding minority and women students who are pursuing Ph.D. studies in computer and communications-related fields. This website includes a description of the program, an application form, and instructions on how to apply.

Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Predoctoral Training Program

The goal of the bioinformatics and computational biology training program is to train Ph.D. students in the background theory and biological application of information sciences (including computer science, statistics, mathematics and others) and to use this training to study problems relevant to biomedical research. Of particular interest, in light of emerging sources of biological data, are multi-scale (different levels of abstraction) and large-scale (data-intensive) problems in biology. The aim is to train a new class of scientist with a primary identity as a computational biologist/bioinformaticist, and whose disciplinary core draws from an emerging set of principles of how to compute, analyze and apply biological data.

Clarivate Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to foster research in information science by encouraging and assisting doctoral students in the field with their dissertation research.

Amount: $1,500
Approximate Deadline: March 31
Eligibility: (a) Be an active doctoral student in the information science area in a degree-granting institution; (b) Have completed all course work; and © Have had a dissertation proposal accepted by the institution.

CSGrad4US Fellowships

The Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Graduate Fellowships (CSGrad4US) aim to increase the number of diverse, domestic graduate students pursuing research and innovation careers in the CISE fields: computer science, computer engineering, or information science. In particular, CSGrad4US provides an opportunity for bachelor’s degree holders who may be working in industry or other sectors to return to academia and pursue research-based doctoral degrees. In its inaugural year, a diverse cohort of 70 CSGrad4US Fellows will be selected based on their demonstrated interest and potential in pursuing a Ph.D. degree in a CISE field.

Amount: 1 year mentored support, then $34,000 annual stipend plus $12,000 cost-of-living allowance for 3 years
Approximate Deadline: Early April
Eligibility: U.S. citizens, nationals or permanent residents; recent bachelor's degree in a CISE field; not enrolled in a master’s or doctoral degree-granting program for a CISE discipline at the time of the application (other than a professional master’s degree program); and no previous NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.

Dissertation Fellowship Program

The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These $25,000 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world.

Amount: $25,000
Approximate Deadline: Early October
Eligibility: Dissertation topic must concern education.

Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards

Emerald Group Publishing Limited, publisher of the largest collection of international business and management journals, and the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), a global membership organization with more than 700 institutional members from academia, business and public services, seek to celebrate excellence in research by sponsoring the 2009 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards.

Amount: $2,000
Eligibility: Doctoral exam requirements completed within last 3 years.

Ford Foundation Scholarships (Multiple Awards)

Through its Fellowship Program, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

Amount: $20,000-40,000
Approximate Deadline: Early November
Eligibility: Scholars committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level.

Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowships - Fellowships for advanced training in Canadian, East-, Central-, South-, and Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, Russian and Eastern European and Western European Area Studies.

Amount: $6,500-$27,000
Approximate Deadline: January
Eligibility: Graduate and professional students planning to take intensive foreign language study courses. Must be a U.S. citizen.

Foundation for Science and Disability Student Award

FSD stresses the ability of scientists and students with disabilities to contribute to science and society. Members of FSD also work together to promote employment opportunities and to increase the participation of scientists with disabilities in the academic, government, and industrial aspects of society.

Amount: $1,000
Approximate Deadline: Early December
Eligibility: United States citizen and new Graduate student with a disability in technical field

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad

This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months.

Amount: Travel expenses, stipend, project allowance
Approximate Deadline: Early December
Eligibility: U.S. citizen or permanent resident, admitted to a doctoral program, planning a teaching career in the U.S. upon graduation.

Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Scholarships

4 scholarships are awarded to a student (undergraduate, master's or Ph.D.) enrolled in a program related to the healthcare information and management systems field. In addition to the $5,000 scholarship award, the winner will also receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition.

Amount: $5,000
Approximate Deadline: October
Eligibility: The applicant must be a member in good standing of HIMSS. The primary occupation of the applicant at the time the scholarship is awarded must be that of a full-time student enrolled in an accredited undergraduate, Masters or PhD program related to the healthcare information management systems field. The specific degree program is not a critical factor, however, students enrolled in a MIS or Healthcare Administration-like program highly preferred. Undergraduate applicants must be at least a first-term junior when the scholarship is awarded.

IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards Program honors exceptional Ph.D. students who have an interest in solving problems that are important to IBM and fundamental to innovation in many academic disciplines and areas of study. These include: computer science and engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering, physical sciences (including chemistry, material sciences, and physics), mathematical sciences (including optimization), business sciences (including financial services, communication, and learning/knowledge), and service science, management, and engineering (SSME).

Eligibility: Students must be nominated by a faculty member. They must be enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program, and they must have completed at least one year of study in their doctoral program at the time of their nomination.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowships Program

This program provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Amount: Up to $43,000 in tuition and stipend
Approximate Deadline: Early October
Eligibility: U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, entering a doctoral program or MFA program.

Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources

The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is pleased to offer fellowships generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for dissertation research in the humanities in original sources. The purposes of this fellowship program are to: * help junior scholars in the humanities and related social-science fields gain skill and creativity in developing knowledge from original sources * enable dissertation writers to do research wherever relevant sources may be, rather than just where financial support is available * encourage more extensive and innovative uses of original sources in libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and related repositories in the U.S. and abroad, and * provide insight from the viewpoint of doctoral candidates into how scholarly resources can be developed for access most helpfully in the future.

Amount: Up to $25,000
Eligibility: Enrolled in doctoral program with plans to do dissertation research primarily in original source material.

Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships

These fellowships are to assist graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences in the last year of Ph.D. dissertation writing. This program aims to encourage timely completion of the Ph.D.

Amount: Up to $33,000
Approximate Deadline: Early November
Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates in a humanities or social science department in the United States.

Microsoft Research Dissertation Grant

The Microsoft Research Dissertation Grant provides funding of up to $25,000 USD for an academic year for doctoral students who are underrepresented in the field of computing. This program supports those who self-identify as a woman, African American, Black, Hispanic, Latinx, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and/or person with a disability. Those who are interested must be in their fourth year or beyond of a Ph.D. program. Grants are awarded by Microsoft Research at the discretion of Microsoft.

Amount: Up to $25,000
Approximate Deadline: March 30
Eligibility: Student in their fourth-year or beyond in a doctoral program in CS, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics

Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship Program

The Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship is a two-year fellowship program for outstanding PhD students nominated by their universities. This program supports men and women in their third and fourth years of PhD graduate studies. To be eligible for this fellowship, you must apply during your second or third year of PhD studies. Fellowships are granted by Microsoft Research at the discretion of Microsoft.

Amount: Tuition, $28,000 stipend, $4,000 travel allowance
Approximate Deadline: October
Eligibility: Students in 3rd and 4th year of PhD studies in CS, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,654 graduate fellowships in this competition pending availability of funds. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are in the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.

Amount: Up to $40,000

Eligibility: U.S. citizens and nationals in early stages of graduate study.

Paul Evan Peters Scholarship

The Paul Evan Peters Scholarship was established to honor and perpetuate the memory of Paul Evan Peters (1947-1996), founding executive director of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI). The fellowship will assist students pursuing graduate studies in the information sciences, librarianship, or closely related field, that advance the frontiers of digital information and technology.

Approximate Deadline: Closed for 2024. Will open in 2026.
Eligibility: U.S. citizen or permanent resident, entering or enrolled in a master's or doctoral program in information science.

PMI Educational Foundation Scholarships

PMI Educational Foundation’s Scholarships and Awards Program supports development of the best and brightest future project management professionals worldwide through learning opportunities. The scholarship program was established to assist students in obtaining degrees from accredited institutions of high learning in the field of project management or a project management related field.

Amount: $1,000-$7,500

Eligibility: PMI Educational Foundation’s Scholarships and Awards Program supports development of the best and brightest future project management professionals worldwide through learning opportunities. The scholarship program was established to assist students in obtaining degrees from accredited institutions of high learning in the field of project management or a project management related field. The program is open to any student preparing to enter or already attending an accredited degree-granting college or university. Scholarships are available for students at the bachelors, masters or doctoral level.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Academic Libraries

CLIR Postdoctoral Library Fellows work on projects that exploit current information technology to forge, renovate, and strengthen connections between academic library collections and their users. The program offers scholars the chance to develop new research models, collaborate with information specialists, and explore new career opportunities. Participating libraries benefit from the expertise of accomplished scholars who can invigorate approaches to collection use and teaching, contribute field-specific knowledge, and provide insight into the future of scholarship.

SBE Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants

The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), and Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS) award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university. Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the question.

Eligibility: Student enrolled at U.S. institution; does not need to be a citizen. Women, minorities, and people with disabilities strongly encouraged to apply.

Social Science and Humanities Research Council Awards (Multiple)

SSHRC supports postsecondary-based research, research training and knowledge mobilization activities in the social sciences and humanities.

Soros Fellowships for New Americans

Paul and Daisy Soros, Hungarian immigrants and American philanthropists, established their fellowship program for New Americans in December 1997 with a charitable trust of fifty million dollars.

Amount: Up to $25,000 in maintenance grants and $20,000 a year in tuition
Approximate Deadline: Oct. 26
Eligibility: Permanent residents or naturalized citizens if born abroad; otherwise children of naturalized citizen parents. Recipients must be in a residential program

The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship

The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature.

Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates in the writing phase of their dissertation; have not received previous similar fellowships.

The Woodrow Wilson Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Women's Studies

The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies encourages original and significant research about women that crosses disciplinary, regional, or cultural boundaries. Previous Fellows have explored such topics as transnational religious education for Muslim women, the complex gender dynamics of transidentity management, women’s electoral success across racial and institutional contexts, women’s sports, militarism and the education of American women, and the relationship between family commitments and women’s work mobility.

Eligibility: Ph.D. candidates who will complete their dissertations during the fellowship year.

Thomson Reuters/MLA Doctoral Fellowship

Thomson Reuters sponsors a fellowship in the amount of $2,000 to foster and encourage superior students to conduct doctoral work in an area of health sciences librarianship or information sciences and to provide support to individuals who have been admitted to candidacy.

UW Fellowships and Awards (Multiple)

The Office of Fellowships and Awards coordinates and administers regional and federal fellowship and scholarship programs which require Graduate School involvement.
