Degree completion requirements

Students entering Autumn 2019 to summer 2022 will adhere to the following degree requirements:

  • Pass all required core courses with a 2.7 or higher, or CR grade:
    • IMT 580 Management and Strategic Leadership
    • IMT 570 Analytic Methods for Information Professionals
    • IMT 550 Policy and Ethics in Information Management
    • IMT 500 Foundations of Information Management (required for Early-Career and Early-Career Accelerated students; not required for Mid-Career students)
  • Culminating experience requirement: Early-Career students must complete a Capstone (sponsored industry project or sponsored research project) and typically are able to complete an internship or other research project if they choose. Early-Career Accelerated students also must complete one practicum (Capstone, internship or research project). For Mid-Career students, all culminating experiences are optional.

Early-Career Accelerated degree plan (for students entering 2019 to summer 2022)

The MSIM Early-Career Accelerated track requires 40 credits. Residential students typically complete it in one year including summer quarter. Online students should consult the portal for MSIM online for degree planning. In addition to the required foundational core courses and practicum, students can complete one specialization.

Early-Career degree plan (for students entering 2019 to summer 2022)

The MSIM Early-Career track requires 65 credits. Residential students typically complete it in two years. Online students should consult the MSIM online portal for degree planning. In addition to the required foundational core courses and a practicum, students can complete two specializations.

Mid-Career degree plan (for students entering 2019 to summer 2022)

The MSIM Mid-Career track requires 36 credits. Residential students can complete it in as little as one calendar year (including summer) by taking a full-time course schedule in either winter or spring quarter, but you can complete your degree at a slower pace if you wish. Online students should consult the MSIM online portal. In addition to the required foundational core courses, students can complete one specialization and electives.

* Residential students wishing to complete their degree in one year will need to take a full-time course schedule in either their second or third term (winter or spring quarter).

For students wishing to broaden their MSIM degree, it is possible to extend your time at the iSchool to complete a second specialization or additional experiential learning projects. The degree plan for these students will vary based on their career goals and schedule, but a common 2-year schedule for residential students is as follows:
