2023-24 iSchool IDEAS Events
iDEAS Affinity Group iWelcome
Friday, Sept. 22, 2023: 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.: wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ – Intellectual House
Current iSchool students, faculty and staff welcome newly admitted iSchool graduate students.
The IDEAS Affinity Group iWelcome Lunch & Social connects incoming and current iSchool BIPOC & international undergraduate and graduate students and students from other historically excluded groups. Students meet and mingle across programs, cohorts and modes in order to share stories and experiences, socialize and build community together.
An essential part of developing and sustaining a community of belonging is creating authentic pathways to connect with one another in meaningful and powerful ways. We invite you to connect with others, as well as to meet your program chairs, program coordinators and IDEAS and career advisors. Leaders and members of iSchool student orgs are looking forward to welcoming you to the iSchool. Find voice, find friends, find future by connecting with your student orgs.
We invite iSchool activists, advocates, allies, academics and adventurers from all backgrounds. ALL are welcome to join us and lunch is provided! Get involved early and make a difference. Change lives!
*In Person, On Campus*

Accessibilty and Disabilty
Panel with Jennifer Mankoff and iSchool students
This is NOT a duplicate of last Spring's IDEAS Summit. Given today’s reliance and the iSchool’s focus on technology, understanding accessibility challenges, norms and benefits is essential for all of us — iSchool students, faculty and staff. We will continue to build our knowledge and skills around accessibility and disability.
More info to come shortly!
For accommodations, please notify the Disability Services Office at 206.543.6450 or dso@u.washington.edu at least 10 days prior to this event.
High School to iSchool: Diversity & Inclusion Outreach Initiative
FearLess Tech More Innovation Challenge: Oct. 9-13, 2023
Presented by Women in Informatics (Winfo) and the Office of IDEAS
Women in Informatics and the Office of IDEAS are excited to welcome middle and high school students from Washington state and beyond to engage in a weeklong online design challenge. FearLess Tech More Innovation Challenge is an opportunity for middle and high school students to experiment and explore the possibilities using technology for social good, to understand that they can and will shape our future. It is not about what can we do with technology; rather, it is about what should we do with technology.
FearLess is a weeklong hackathon and includes time for students to watch instructional videos, engage with mentors, and build their own project with a team of their choosing. The process is completely virtual, and at the end participants get to showcase their projects to each other and judges from the UW iSchool. (Did we mention there are prizes, too?)
Hack for Social Good Hackathon: April 5, 2023; wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ – Intellectual House
Presented by Women in Informatics, the Office of IDEAS and the DREAM Project
Hack for Social Good brings together 200 diverse middle and high school students with a range of skill sets to develop solutions that address a wide array of issues, all by design. No technical background is required. We seek to explore, design and create potential technology-based solutions that positively impact the world. Hack for Social Good challenges students to venture into a new problem space and develop thoughtful solutions that advance diversity, equity and inclusion. Be the change you wish to see!
Students will work in small teams with UW students as mentors guiding them. This event will foster an inclusive and collaborative environment for middle and high school students to engage with the UW Informatics undergraduate major, learn about potential careers in the field, increase their exposure to the UW campus, and to learn about UW Freshman Direct Admission. Lunch will be provided, and students will have the opportunity to win prizes!
Current UW students: Learn details about mentorship opportunities for this innovation challenge.
