Unreal Engine 4 Documentation Taxonomy Project

Creating a video game is an arduous process, especially in an ever-growing billion-dollar industry. Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 gives users the opportunity to develop their own games. However, their documentation often faces challenges of discoverability and usability due to non-standard tagging vocabulary. Our project solves this problem by creating a taxonomy, which allows users of different backgrounds and skill levels to easily search through documentation. It produces significant commercial implications by improving accessibility for new users, and serving as a foundation for future work, such as ontology development and Documentation as a Service, increasing developer participation and diversity.

UW Herbarium: Image Processing & Data Curation

Digitization has enabled inward-facing memory institutions to provide unprecedented access to archived records, contributing to interdisciplinary discoveries and knowledge dissemination. In addition to an extensive specimen archive, the U.W. Herbarium supports a consortial database for digitized records and virtual tools for images. This expansion of institutional responsibilities with static or ad-hoc funding provides the impetus for a digital curation plan which is capable of functioning within the parameters of a modern herbarium. This project examined the modern herbarium’s information landscape yielding 3,000+ processed images, documented workflows, a targeted data curation plan, and two related articles for submission.

BlockBusters: Combining the Dark Web and Bitcoin

The Dark Web and Bitcoin are both digital systems that the average person has little understanding of. Yet both of these platforms have very real impacts on the world and can affect people without their knowledge. The Dark Web is a new digital black market that uses Bitcoin as its primary currency. Both of these are considered anonymous, yet they can be combined. Similar features could then be used, matching Bitcoin and Dark web users. Our team cleaned and parsed the two data sets, combining them in one location and exploring the information they contain to start the deanonymization process.

Cataloging at the Arsenal: Establishing a research library at the Washington National Guard Museum

Over the years, the Washington National Guard Museum has accepted donations amounting to several hundred books. These books were un-inventoried and taking up space in various storage areas. The Museum Board envisioned a Research Library to provide access to these books, but did not have the resources, or expertise to put that library together. Our team was able to catalog a large portion of the books, weed out items outside the scope of the library, and set up collection development and cataloging policies and procedures - giving the Museum tools to establish a Research Library and continue to manage the collection.

Children Will Listen: The Value of Children's Literature

Using the Historical Children’s Literature Collection at the University of Washington, Special Collections, we aim to shed light on how much can be gleaned from the study of children’s literature of the past. With this project, we have created an online exhibit with teaching tools and research guides to garner more public engagement with this collection. Our goal is to provide access to these items in order to inspire studies, share with others, and encourage future use of UW Special Collections materials.

Devour

We aim to solve the age old question “What should we eat for dinner?” Devour solves this problem and provides key recipes that every individual in your party will enjoy. We recognize that eating is more than just an individual act, and embrace that personalization goes beyond the individual. Applications like Netflix and Pandora have disrupted their respective industries by providing their specific user with recommended results. Our application takes it even further. Instead of stopping at providing key recipes for the individual user (which we do), we incorporate everyone in your party to enjoy the fruits of our application.

Edward & Asahel Curtis Online Photography Exhibit

Founded in 1894, the Mazamas is a Portland-based nonprofit organization, focused on mountaineering education. Mazamas members Edward Curtis, known for his Native American portrait photography, and Asahel Curtis photographed many expeditions. Previously, lack of resources kept those photographs stored away. Our group created an online, searchable exhibit of both the photographs and equipment typical of the era. Through research, assessment, digitization and metadata application, we curated an online exhibit which highlights early Mazamas history. Digitization and increasing public access will generate greater awareness of the Mazamas and promote their mission both locally and on a larger geographical scale.

Exception Null

There is a 3.6% unemployment rate and 263,000 unfilled jobs in the tech industry as of 2017. This, despite the fact that there were 116,00 tech graduates across colleges in America in 2016. Schools do an amazing job of giving us the foundational skills to work in tech but there is a gap between the classroom and the office. Our platform aims to bridge the void through challenges that emphasize best-practices and real-world interactions. In addition, every paying user will be putting money towards goodwill causes for those who may not be able to afford it.
