Knock! Knock! "Who's there?"

Industrial control systems, a type of cyber-physical system, control critical infrastructures such as national power distribution (nuclear, electrical, etc), manufacturing, and communication infrastructures. The increased internet-connectivity of devices within these networks create apertures for malicious actors to access and control these critical infrastructures. Teaming with FireEye, we retrieved publicly available information about IP addresses that were recorded port-scanning an ICS system. We extracted a list of features that indicate the IP address may be malicious, and created a confidence level to help clients determine potential maliciousness. Using improved capabilities, companies can have increased visibility into their ICS environment.

Life and Times in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District: A Collection of Oral Histories

The Wing Luke Museum's collection of Asian and Pacific Islander oral histories encompasses over 900 interviews. Users can request digital transcripts, but audio recordings can only be accessed in-person at the Wing. For this Oral History Project, we have curated nearly 200 interviews highlighting Seattle’s Chinatown-International District and its various communities; Relevant PDF transcripts and MP3 audio files are now available online through an Oral History website. Not only is this website beneficial for local users, but it is also a tangible tool for the Wing to reach users worldwide who are interested in the Wing’s Oral History Program.

MISO: A Database for the Musical Instruments of the Seattle Opera

MISO (Musical Instruments of the Seattle Opera) is a Microsoft Access database designed to track the Seattle Opera’s instrument collection. Before MISO, instruments were tracked using several spreadsheets that were inconsistent and difficult to update. The Seattle Opera realized it needed a better system when a cimbasso went missing. After a frantic search, it was discovered that the cimbasso was never missing - it had been in the Seattle Opera’s library all along. With MISO, all relevant instrument information, including location, current user and technical specifications are all combined into one location, ensuring that no instrument is lost.

Shelves

Shelves transforms KEXP's library of 70,000 vinyl and CD albums into a digital curation tool that preserves the sonic identity of the world's premier listener-supported radio station. It amplifies radio hosts’ abilities to craft creative broadcasts by augmenting the physical music library with tools for searching, organizing, and discovering music in the collection. In response to a musical landscape dominated by algorithmic suggestion, Shelves uses technology to aid KEXP in its mission to preserve “robot-free radio” and place human curation and connection back at the heart of the listener experience.

Student Records Retention and Digitization Project

Since 1988, DigiPen Institute of Technology has relied heavily on paper-based student records with minimal disposition and digitization taking place. The institution has a solitary filing room shared by numerous administrative departments, which has reached maximum capacity. To address this issue, I compiled 1) a detailed file retention audit based on current practices, legal requirements, and industry best-practices and 2) a proposal, including quotes from off-site storage, mobile high-density shelving, and document digitization vendors. It is my hope this information will lead to more efficient use of space and eventually improve employee workflows by making files more accessible.
