Open Data Selection Practices

For this capstone project, we explored a collection development challenge for Washington State's open data program. Specifically, we investigated data selection practices at leading government open data programs in the United States. “Selection” in this context refers to the range of practices that determine what and how much data is opened and ultimately published on open data portals. Our final report, which summarizes the state of data selection and best practices across the United States, will help Washington State Library connect individuals and communities to data that will help them flourish.

HazingInfo.org: Bringing Transparency to Hazing Incidents in College Greek Life

Hazing is a widespread problem on college campuses that is amplified by a lack of access to transparent safety information. Developed in partnership with the Houtz/Martinez family, HazingInfo.org is a web application and database that addresses this issue by providing prospective Greek life students and their families with accessible safety information. Schools are assigned letter grades based on the data collected, allowing users to make educated decisions about joining Greek life. HazingInfo.org aims to inform prospective students and their families about Greek chapters, leading to a decrease in hazing incidents and a safer environment for all. One of two identical entries to include all students. See more project members.

UW Global Impact Tracker for Office of Global Affairs

While the UW Office of Global Affairs (OGA) relies on the Global Publications Dashboard to showcase UW faculty’s scholarship and worldwide collaborations, its user retention has decreased since the data source became outdated in 2019. Some users couldn’t find the desired information, such as statistics regarding the department’s global presence and international co-authorship. Additionally, some faculties’ work has not been acknowledged. To address this issue, we retrieved 2 million rows of up-to-date data, improved the name-matching process, added indexing to increase database performance, and developed a networking tool to empower UW faculties to enhance global engagement and facilitate research collaboration.

Costume Rental Database

The Seattle Opera Costume Shop has over 1300 linear feet of costume items, ranging from tricorn hats to corsets to feathered bird tails, but lacked a comprehensive inventory of its stock. The Costume Database project aimed to tackle a fraction of this problem by creating a database of its rental stock. The new cloud-based database describes, tracks and links costume changes, actors, characters, individual costume items, and more for better access and searchability for shop staff, designers, and outside opera companies.

Data Structures and Information System Redesign

The information problem to solve is scattered organizational data, the lack of data normalization and non-collaborative information system. Based on our user stories and Entity Relationship diagram, we created a database for Foundry10 hosted on Azure to store our database as a cloud solution. We utilized Microsoft Access as our front-end platform to communicate with the database. Benefits for our sponsor: Built solid foundation for consolidating internal data structure Create more consistent reports for staff; a database system will bring in data consistency Descriptive data normalization for efficient data analysis by reducing duplicates and organizing unstructured datasets

Developing Automated Workflows for Microsoft Mixed Reality

To help Microsoft’s Mixed Reality (MR) team manage their Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) processes more effectively in a dynamic, centralized environment, we built a data wrangling pipeline to import Secure Controls Framework data into ServiceNow. We achieved the following key results: 1) data properly structured and imported into relevant ServiceNow target tables, 2) imported data automatically updated with regulatory changes, and 3) a ServiceNow dashboard to visualize and track compliance and control information. Through automated data management and transparent analytics, our work helps the MR team assess organizations’ regulatory compliance in a more efficient and cost-saving manner.

Diversifying Readers' Advisory

As a person of color, I often receive requests to recommend books by Indian or Asian authors. Though I do have some favorites, any library staff member (not just those of color) should feel confident recommending work by authors of color. The site “Diversifying Readers’ Advisory” highlights popular authors of recent years. Each author page will provide recommendations for similar titles written by authors of color. I believe emphasizing work by authors of color will encourage immersion into diverse perspectives, increase empathy, and allow diverse work to receive more attention.

From the Ground Up: Facilitating Equity-Focused Partner Tracking

Northwest Harvest's Learning and Impact (L&I) department is focused on the implementation of equity-focused systems to fight food injustice. To that end, it's critical for them to maintain comprehensive, transparent records of their community partnerships, with an emphasis on tracking information that can be used to foster growth of programs and partnerships through the lens of antiracism. In order to help realize that system, I conducted a departmental needs assessment centered around Salesforce data fields, then presented a compilation of my findings and data field requests to Northwest Harvest’s Salesforce administrator, and we established a rough timeline for implementation.
