Building a Tag Protocol for Washington State’s Open Data Program

Data.wa.gov is a digital catalog of open data and consists of a collection of data sets and visualizations uploaded by independent authors. These assets have nearly 1,200 tags applied to them as user input is uncontrolled, leading to numerous duplicates and variants that have reduced the effectiveness of the tags as a whole. We created a tag protocol that consists of defined rules and edge cases along with a dashboard and future recommendations. This solution provides structure to their tag list, and increases data quality, searchability of assets, and sustainability, by reducing tag maintenance and preserving tag effectiveness.

This opinion will establish a framework for the organization that can be perfected in the future and give an idea of the collection at hand. One of my goals for this project is to start the conversation about access to digital archives and the differences between the funding each library has access to.

Evaluating Potential Functionality of a Keyword Taxonomy

IHME has identified the need to evaluate if their keyword taxonomy functionality could be enhanced to improve search experience for public users of their data catalog. The results of this evaluation are a deeper understanding of the keyword taxonomy’s current functionality, how it compares to similar data catalogs, and where valuable changes would enhance current functionality. The results will improve user experience for not only public users, but internal users as well. These changes will also support more efficient internal processes and place IHME in a solid position to grow the functionality of their keyword taxonomy over time.

Extra Lives for a Resource

Don’t Die is a repository of interviews about video games, specifically: -the plight of marginalized voices in the video game industry/culture. -the neglected legacies of systems online that are preventing us from getting along. -the patterns of indifference in media and culture that diminish coverage of labor issues in entertainment industries. Founder David Wolinsky proposed a multi-year project to grow his website into a fully realized resource. Our project focused on the initial development of metadata and taxonomies, as well as making suggestions for future work to set the website up to exist and achieve its long term purpose.

Svoboda Diaries Text Encoding Initiative Project

Building upon the work of a previous project, we have expanded and enhanced the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) guidelines for application to the Svoboda Diaries. The Project had an initial set of guidelines but were seeking a more robust model for representing the intricacies of the diaries. In this project, we developed a Svoboda specific schema, established a method of encoding the margin notes, and provided training materials to ensure the sustainability of this initiative. These resources bring the Svoboda Diaries Project one step closer to digitally representing the diaries in their collection and making them more accessible to researchers.
