Corelytics: Data Analysis of Small IT Businesses

Corelytics provides more than 135 small IT service businesses’ with a financial management tool that helps these businesses maintain an automated account keeping system. The tool, through data analysis algorithms, analyzes and flags transactions that misalign with businesses’ financial goals. Executives use the tool’s dashboard to cut data noise and determine “WHAT” aspects of financial data needs attention for improving revenue to expense ratio. However, these smaller businesses lack resources to analyze and determine how to improve key financial pivots. Wouldn’t it be great if businesses could see financial data trends of healthy companies within their industry? Our project aims on delivering this exact solution by analyzing all hosted financial data in a specific industry. We want to provide financially weaker businesses with healthy trends in their industry via the tool’s dashboard. This will help them determine the “HOW” of improving revenue to expense ratio so that Corelytics can stay true to its commitment of enabling “BETTER BUSINESS DECISIONS”.

Enterprise Intelligence Dashboard using Troux REST API

Enterprise Intelligence Dashboard using Troux ReST API Jorge Borunda (Full Time MSIM) As the second largest retail chain in the world and operating in 9 countries with over 600 warehouses, Costco produces an unceasing amount of data. Costco is widely recognized and respected for its business practices but making critical business decisions with its data analysis processes are not easy tasks. As each Costco department employs a specific application, their data gathering is being done in different silos and the need of an enterprise portfolio has become necessary. Troux, an enterprise portfolio, is a robust and complex application and this project will serve as a self-service information portal intended for Executives, Enterprise and Solution Architects to integrate and align the business overall and make critical business decisions more efficiently. This solution will increase the utilization of Troux as information asset and also to maintain the flow of information among departments to create effective and meaningful reports.

Full Circle Customer Retention

Now more than ever, businesses have access to enormous data sets that include their customer transactions, demographic data and more. But simply storing the data does not mean the data is useful. How do organizations transform this data into a valuable business asset? Our project sponsor, Full Circle, the largest farm-to-customer organic produce and delivery service in the Pacific Northwest, asked us to develop a comprehensive assessment of customer retention by analyzing information available in their databases and marketing surveys. We used qualitative and quantitative research methods paired with design techniques to explore customer sentiment, analyze target audiences, identify independent variables significant to retention, and recommend prescriptive actions. Keeping customers is critical to the mission of Full Circle. Our analysis of customer purchasing behaviors and survey preferences led to actionable intelligence to improve customer retention by pinpointing how Full Circle better fulfill customer needs and expectations.

Healthcare Cost Transparency

Healthcare costs in the U.S. have skyrocketed from $1.4 trillion in 2000 to $2.9 trillion in 2014 according to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Our project – All-Payer Claims Database (APCD) Healthcare Cost Transparency, sponsored by the Washington Health Alliance (WHA) – may be a solution in healthcare cost containment and service improvement. APCDs collect de-identified medical claims data including clinical, financial, and utilization data. Several states have already passed a law to mandate an APCD, and Washington State is on the verge of passing the same law. WHA has the opportunity to be selected as the lead organization as the state authorized APCD administrator. Our project evaluates hosting options – in-house versus the cloud – and builds a functional but scaled-down APCD in Azure cloud to determine its feasibility. The result of this project will be to arm WHA with the knowledge to make informed decisions on the best APCD hosting option.

Internet of Things: Grocery Store Operations Manager

A typical grocery store in your neighborhood grapples with the challenges of high operating costs, narrow margins and losses in expired inventory. Achieving incremental gains in optimizing inventory stocking, efficient consumption of utilities and avoiding wastages will result in huge impact on the bottom line of locally operated grocery stores. Our project ventures in this space to provide a facility management platform for store managers to centrally monitor performance of various devices in the store and collect insights for operational intelligence. We have designed a centralized dashboard for store managers to connect, configure and monitor performance of typical devices that you find in a grocery store. The dashboard can be used for fault and configuration management to minimize MTTR (mean time to response). Data is collected by a polling mechanism which queries devices about their statuses. The data collected can be used for rendering trending graphs and generate reports for forecasting and proactively detect issues before they arise.

Jumo

Jumo: We’ll log your hours Auditing is an important component to UW Athletics because this determines whether or not athletes can compete for their university’s athletic success. The current system is quite complex and inefficient; coaches struggle with logging practice hours for their athletes due to a cluttered interface, poor user experience, and having to deal with a lot of manual inputs. Additionally, the current system does not provide coaches with any sort of review process, which represents a lack of compliance checking. Jumo aims to solve these concerns by utilizing RFID technology to accurately log hours for coaches, reducing manual input and human errors. Simultaneously, Jumo checks for compliance in the back end to ensure NCAA bylaws are met. With Jumo, we do the heavy lifting for the UW Athletics. KairosPDX Learning Academy: Managing Documentation for Emergent Curriculum and Social-Emotional Learning

KairosPDX Learning Academy (KLA) is a new Portland, Oregon charter school aimed at attacking the racial achievement gap. Curriculum is both designed – based on the Common Core Standards, and emergent – evolving from the interests and curiosity of students. KLA also specifically teaches foundational life skills including: focus and self-control, perspective taking, communicating, making connections, critical thinking, taking on challenges and self-directed engaged learning. Crucial to this process is documentation – capturing and recording activity and behavior of individual children in order to create curriculum for them and track their development. An enormous amount of information – images, text, audio, and video – is generated for and about each student. I modeled for KLA an implementable cloud-based method to organize, store, manage, and retrieve information as needed for curriculum development, reporting, reflection, and longitudinal assessment of student development, particularly as regards social-emotional learning and life skills.

Measuring Financial Health of Non-Profits: A Data Analysis Initiative with Corelytics

If non-profits were able to analyze their financial data and predict future trends, would they know whether they are on the road to fiscal health or financial failure? Using historical accounting data on non-profit organizations from the Corelytics financial dashboard, we undertook an observational study that identifies key indicators of financial health in non-profits. A novel ranking system was created through appraising each non-profit on key metrics identified and weighted through qualitative research conducted using interviews with industry experts. We provide recommendations to Corelytics on how they can improve their services to non-profit clients, and to non-profits on how to better use Corelytics to track key financial health metrics. The services provided by these non-profits to the communities they reach out to can ultimately be improved through this informed and scientific approach to tracking their fiscal health.

PACER data extraction and manipulation

Lawsuits are filed every day and can cost about $350,000 on average, per commercial tort lawsuit. Organizations are looking to reduce their exposure to such lawsuits as well as reduce the costs related to litigation. Having an indicator of possible inappropriate communications, allows an organization to be proactive in mitigating legal risk and better managing legal expenses. This project, “PACER Data Extraction and Manipulation,” represents a starting point towards an early warning of possible legal liability. The extracted relevant text from the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) will be used in a future project to create subject matter taxonomies. We are taking the first steps towards electronically managing, if not avoiding, potential legal liability for an organization.
