Information Management Solution for The Museum of Flight

The Museum of Flight receives a huge amount of research requests from its patrons/customers. The requests are collected through paper forms, stored in editable PDF’s and processed in Excel for reference and tracking purposes. Due to inefficient processing and primitive technology, the resource usage is high and redundant. They strive for a robust information management system which is intuitive to use, can be accessed from multiple locations and stores data centrally. The Data Flight capstone team assessed the requirements and designed a database management system for the museum of flight. The new system is built on cutting edge technology, incorporating important features like central storage, multiple session access to update data in real time, and multivariable reporting. As a prospective patron/customer of the museum, your requests will be processed much faster. The solutions takes paper forms out of the equation and contributes towards a clean and greener environment.

Partners in Health: Bringing Elite Care to You

The healthcare industry is undergoing rapid change whereby it is expected to perform better with fewer resources. Regional health systems struggle to perform at the level of national or larger teaching institutions with respect to infrastructure and knowledge. We have performed analysis on behalf of Lakeland Regional Health (LRH), a large regional healthcare system. LRH hopes to enhance the quality of its service and business performance through a key partnership with a nationally-recognized healthcare system. We have provided consulting services to LRH in outlining strategic initiatives and business intelligence implementations to help them verify the benefits are worth the cost of this partnership. These include market share analysis to assess outmigration trends and evaluation of quality of care to identify key areas for improvement. Findings were delivered through a report and dashboard that will help them predict the areas of focus and systematically track their performance against their goals.

PrepSmart

The company Test Innovators helps students prepare for standardized tests like ISEE/SSAT. Students sign up to their platform and take practice exams. They have more than 20,000 students signed up till date and pocess more than 5,000,000 questions on their system. The company wanted to build a system which automatically analyzes the student's progress in their practice tests and recommend ways to improve their scores. We have built a system, PrepSmart, that automatically learns from past experiences of students who are similar to the current test taker and suggest their features to the current test taker to improve his scores. Recommendations can be anything like strong/weak subject areas, time to answer questions, additional question banks and tutoring services. PrepSmart helps students in improving their overall scores and it also helps the sponsor in generating additional revenue by selling recommended question banks and tutoring services.

Proposing Research: Organizational Dashboard (PROD)

PROD is an online dashboard prototype designed to help UW School of Nursing (SoN) pre- and post-doctoral students prepare research proposals. Students who are new to the proposal development and submission process tend to underestimate the amount of work necessary to pull together a successful proposal that is also compliant with SoN, UW, and sponsor policies. PROD provides students with an organizational tool that allows them to alert staff of their intention to submit, create and maintain a timeline and checklist, and provide real-time updates to faculty mentors and administrative staff about their progress with each proposal component. PROD offers advice in a variety of compliance areas including: human subjects, laboratory use, vertebrate animals, international work, budget, etc. This tool is designed with consideration for the information needs and behaviors of nursing students, allowing them to work at their own pace while keeping all stakeholders apprised of their progress.

Shared Folder Access Review: Guiding Group Health towards ePHI Security

To provide its members with award-winning care, Group Health employees need access to data. This includes electronic Personal Health Information (ePHI) which is distributed throughout the company-wide scheme of network folders. To safeguard ePHI, Group Health administrators have to determine who needs access to this data and at what level. For our Capstone, we joined the Identity and Access Management Department at Group Health, where we led the File Folder Access Review process. During our 5-month engagement, we helped 60 Group Health leaders identify appropriate access among employees to ePHI data. To accomplish this, we conducted gap analysis research, refined existing review structures, and deployed access reviews of 1000+ network folders. Through our project, we ensured effective access to data in compliance with Healthcare Information Portability and Privacy Act (HIPPA) regulations, ultimately decreasing security risks for the entire Cooperative, patients and employees alike.

Small Hotel Management System

Once one of our team members, Jason, travelled to the west coast of the US and stayed in a small and cozy hotel. He was surprised to see the front desk making notes with her pen and paper and her pc monitor being surrounded by sticky notes. Apparently those notes weren’t helping much as she was still busy browsing through pages and sticky notes for a piece of information. Jason couldn’t help but wondering: is there a information management tool that he can build, without too much investment, to help those small hotels to do their business in a snap? This is what our project aims to tackle: to usher small hotels, who are still managing their information manually, to a technology based information system built with an open source relational database and an intuitive user interface. Our goal is simple. We want to offer hoteliers a solution to run their core business functions more efficiently, and to make their life much easier.

SPYRAL

Companies around the world are investing in cybersecurity but are not confident in their security controls as the technology landscape is ever changing. Spyral, our risk scoring framework, aims to provide operational cyber awareness for companies by providing them the fastest actionable insight into their risk posture. National Vulnerability Database(NVD) provides a vulnerability score for different software flaws. Spyral extracts this vulnerability score from NVD and superimposes it with other operating environment factors such as number of machines in environment, cloud infrastructure, and affiliation with external entities to come up with a risk score contextual to the company. Spyral is also industry agnostic and does not take special regulations into consideration to provide an unbiased scoring based on only the operating conditions. This information is going to be presented in an information visualization dashboard which will provide quick insights into their risk posture.

The Library of Things Extended: Launching a Public-Library Affiliated Tool Lending Library

In collaboration with the Hillsboro Public Library, the information problem is how to craft an extension of the current non-traditional collection – the “Library of Things” – into one of the few tool lending libraries affiliated with a public library affiliated. To solve this problem, I assisted from research on waiver verbiage to targeted marketing and strategic planning. I have been on the ground floor of a new community resource, a part of the origin story of a burgeoning force in public libraries, a pivotal opportunity to provide an innovative, yet essential service. The “Library of Things” is a service model expanding libraries’ lending capabilities beyond books. Public libraries embrace and exemplify this emerging feature of the “sharing economy”. Talk of the sharing economy tends to revolve around flashy startups which disrupt markets. Yet public libraries were sharing before it was cool: lending materials to people who, in some sense, collectively own them yet may not otherwise be able to afford them. The sharing service model evokes a sense of community, resonates with cultivating genuine connections and lasting engagement.

The Route Assessor

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. But when it comes to moving freight, that line becomes complex. In these uncertain times of political upheaval, natural disasters and huge amount of freight theft, Route Assessor aims to empower Expeditors in choosing better delivery routes based on various risk parameters. This robust web based solution helps Expeditors in recommending the best route to the customer, so that risk can be intelligently and appropriately managed. A real time risk score is calculated for a given source and destination, based on FBI crime data, Freightwatch data, weather and commodity type. With Route Assessor, Expeditors can provide a holistic risk assessment of customer’s shipment by helping them to choose better risk mitigation products and provide a superior quality of service compared to its competitors. Route Assessor reduces the probability of an “unwanted surprise” within the supply chain logistic.
