In June 2014, Joel was promoted to Assistant Director of Operations at the University of Washington Tacoma Institute of Technology.

Joel and Tracy Henderson (MSIM 2008), manager of venture sales at Mike's Hard Lemonade, partnered on a Capstone project that took on a new life. In 2011, Dr. Jennifer Hoffman, a faculty member at the UW Center for Leadership in Athletics, was awarded a partial grant from the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics to continue development of the Intercollegiate Athletics Leadership Database, which Joel and Tracy developed as students.
