Family Document Digitization

Many people have piles of papers and photos that they would like to digitize, but they don't know where to start. Family Document Digitization is a website that takes users step-by-step through the process of digitizing, storing, and sharing their letters, photos, diaries, and more. The website features blog posts on how to digitize, store, and share their documents using accessible equipment, free applications, and household objects. The project sponsor is Cook Memorial Library in La Grande, Oregon, a rural public library serving users of all ages.

Fiction Filters: Taxonomy for Adult Fiction

Fiction subject tagging in libraries is largely ineffectual for a variety of reasons—e.g. a lack of robust, open-access vocabularies, the difficulty of assessing the contents of unread fiction, and unsuitable software. In partnership with the Fiction Filters: Crowdsourcing Website group—who created the host website—we created a core vocabulary of tags in subject areas such as character traits and tropes, which users can add to and use to tag previously read books. This gives power to readers to highlight what they find most important and appealing about books, browse by personal interests, and filter out unwanted content.

From the Ground Up: Facilitating Equity-Focused Partner Tracking

Northwest Harvest's Learning and Impact (L&I) department is focused on the implementation of equity-focused systems to fight food injustice. To that end, it's critical for them to maintain comprehensive, transparent records of their community partnerships, with an emphasis on tracking information that can be used to foster growth of programs and partnerships through the lens of antiracism. In order to help realize that system, I conducted a departmental needs assessment centered around Salesforce data fields, then presented a compilation of my findings and data field requests to Northwest Harvest’s Salesforce administrator, and we established a rough timeline for implementation.

Husky SLAM: An In-Depth Azure Security Analysis

Microsoft supports over a billion users whether it be with a product or a service. Maintaining information confidentiality is a top priority along with data integrity. By conducting research and analysis, we can take the necessary steps to ensure those priorities are met. We have developed an all-encompassing web page to act as a one-stop-shop for our two main solutions, an in-depth security analysis report translating our findings into a clear story and an interactive classification search in order to quickly research failures, find out why they occur, and obtain recommendations on remediation and prevention measures.

League of Legends Esports Alexa Skill - A New Way to Engage with Esports

Esports have an immense amount of data tracked and available during the game, but it’s not always accessible to interact with. This is why Riot Games (Creators of League of Legends & Valorant) tasked us with creating a fresh and fun way for new and experienced League of Legends (LoL) Esports fans alike to keep up with the games. Whether you want to ask which team is winning, what the standings are in the league, or set a reminder for your next game, the LoL Esports Alexa Skill is ready to immerse you in a new level of engagement.

Merck-MeSH Prototype Dictionary

Within the realm of veterinary information, there are two major free resources: The Merck Veterinary Manual, and PubMed. Unfortunately, as PubMed, and by extension its controlled vocabulary, MeSH, are intended for human medical data, it is difficult for most users to make the jump between these two resources. This project is intended to bridge these two resources, however, was of mixed success, as the level of equivalency was so low that using MeSH at all was rarely more effective than just using a well-structured search. However, giving the students structure to their search aided the effectiveness of their searches immensely.

Metadata: It’s Everything

Arnold Library is a biomedical library part of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center recently migrated to a CONTENTdm system and aims to make the Archive dataset fully searchable for all Fred Hutch employees. To support the library in better facilitating information discovery for users, this project examined available CONTENTdm features and further improved the metadata standards. As a result, the project produced guideline documentation on how to employ finding aids to improve the search functionality of the collection. Additionally, this built the foundation for future work to further improve user information access and discovery within the CONTENTdm system.

More than just hierarchy: a novel classification representation outside of decimal systems

Classification schemes typically used in libraries are strictly hierarchical, which can be useful for organization of resources, but does not reflect the more general structure of the universe of knowledge. Epistemologically, knowledge has other types of relationships between resources (e.g. ontologies reflect this well). Graph theory in the computer science field provides compelling transformations from existing classification schemes to novel representations. Tries, the structure that decimal schemes use, when transformed to more general structures, solve a number of issues, both epistemological and logistical (logistical issues being shelving, discoverability, and other physical library considerations).

Phenomenality: Helping Gender Minorities Mitigate Imposter Phenomenon in the Workplace

Gender minorities entering the technology field experience imposter phenomenon (IP) at a disproportionate rate as compared to their male counterparts. Phenomenality aims to mitigate the effects of perceived inadequacy by encouraging users to reflect on and celebrate their daily accomplishments in a journal-like manner. Through consistent, affirmative self-talk, a Likert scale quiz, and personalized IP alleviation strategies, Phenomenality provides gender minorities with the resources to optimize their potential, boost their confidence, and ultimately flourish in their professional environments.

Records of Past Advice Knowledge Base

Team designed and set up a knowledge base and database of past legal advice into MicroSoft SharePoint, with appropriate indexing, organization and taxonomy. This way, Department of Licensing staff can more readily find, understand and follow legal advice, so the agency can become more protective of privacy and spend less time searching for records.
