America and the Race to the Moon

Using images, moving pictures, documents, and narrative stories, our team has created an engaging digital exhibition in Omeka, an online digital collections management system, for the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). This project explores the history of the Space Race between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from the launch of Sputnik I in 1957 through the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon in 1969. Team members addressed copyright issues, gained permissions as needed, and developed metadata according to Dublin Core standards. Since the DPLA is an aggregation of digital objects from partnering institutions all over the country, our project aimed to curate digital objects exemplifying a theme of national importance. In doing so, we hope to engage an audience of scholars, students, and all those who may wish to learn more about this evocative period in time.

Board Recruitment Knowledge Management Solution

In today’s increasingly complex and transparent global environment, the board of directors is required to balance short-term pressures with developing high performing, trustworthy and sustainable organizations. Recruiting directors with the relevant experience and expertise to provide guidance, support and inspiration for the organization is critical to achieving this balance. Korn Ferry Canada is a leadership talent consulting and executive search firm that provides a range of board advisory services including recruiting, assessment and board effectiveness. With offices located across unique and diverse geographies, regional information silos and ad-hoc processes have emerged. This project investigates existing workflows and resources and compares them against the team’s information requirements. The Knowledge Management solution includes recommendations for improving the quality of candidate and client information being accessed, captured, shared and reused for board recruiting. If implemented, the Knowledge Management solution will improve operational efficiency for Korn Ferry Canada’s board practice team.

Bontology

Colliers International, a commercial real estate company, currently faces problems with sharing information across their organization. Their organization houses many data silos which contain important client, deal, and referral information. Some of this data is accessible to employees but much of it is held privately within regional office databases and is difficult to share due to data formatting issues. Their information silos prevent them from capitalizing on opportunities that could be made simply by connecting the dots across databases. Bontology (business onotology) is a unique software that is comprised of three parts: a realtor’s dashboard, custom ontology, and conversion software. Bontology’s conversion software works with our custom ontology to connect disparate relational databases in a triple store. The dashboard allows Realtors to view sophisticated data analytics and houses a powerful internal search. Bontology now provides Realtors actionable items that will help drive profit and identify gaps in current business practices.

City of Seattle: Cataloguing Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan

A common problem facing many organizations today is the lack of a centralized knowledge library. One such organization is the City of Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development. Often, data is needed to support updates to Seattle’s 20-year growth plan. This data is usually found buried in Indicator Project reports, scaled data-gathering projects pertaining to civic topics such as Arts & Culture, Education, Housing and Land Use. These Indicator Project reports are stored in various locations throughout the department. Locating the correct data is often met with a high level of difficulty and frustration, due to lack of data availability, conflicting data and the inability to locate relevant data in a timely manner. Our project proposes to resolve these problems by building a centralized data library with an extensive taxonomy and metadata structure designed to enable fast, easy and accurate retrieval of important city demographic data.

Controlled KAOS: Workflow for a Metadata Observatory

The universe of metadata standards is expansive, diverse, and continuously evolving. My project supported the creation of KAOS (Knowledge-Advancing Organization Systems), an online repository for metadata schemes and schemas of all forms, functions, and levels of complexity - including controlled vocabularies, thesauri, web ontologies, subject lists, classification schemes, indexing languages, descriptive frameworks, conceptual models, and more. After exploratory research into data ingest, storage, migration, transformation, analysis, and visualization, I designed, tested, and implemented a proof-of-concept infrastructure and workflow that lays the foundation for development to begin on a larger scale. When fully launched, the KAOS platform will use linked data to visually represent relationships among metadata standards and show changes in those standards over time. As a centralized access point to the wide world of metadata vocabularies, KAOS serves as a valuable resource for information professionals in any domain or industry.

Creating a Parish Library

St. Luke Parish is a Catholic church and school located in Shoreline, Washington. This project focused on organizing the St. Luke Parish library to increase accessibility for parishioners. The parish owned a large number of books, which are now labeled and arranged on the shelves by subject for ease of use and access. I evaluated the checking in/out system and established a system for getting books from the donation stage into the collection, if appropriate. The creation of this library will be a benefit to the parish by providing increased access to helpful books, especially related to issues dealing with the church. The vision is that parishioners will utilize this library often.

Creating an Academic Library in a Women’s Prison

Freedom Education Project Puget Sound (FEPPS) is a nonprofit organization that provides college classes leading to an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree at the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Gig Harbor, WA. Classes are taught by faculty from local colleges and universities with the same academic expectations they would have in a typical college setting. Students work hard to meet and exceed these expectations, but they have limited information resources available to support their studies. We have partnered with FEPPS to address this information gap by creating a small academic library for the students inside the prison. Over 1,000 donated books have been gathered, sorted by subject, and entered into a basic inventory catalog. We have established circulation policies and procedures, and have created collection development and maintenance guidelines. Students are already making good use of the library for class assignments and independent learning.

Enterprise Intelligence Dashboard using Troux REST API

Enterprise Intelligence Dashboard using Troux ReST API Jorge Borunda (Full Time MSIM) As the second largest retail chain in the world and operating in 9 countries with over 600 warehouses, Costco produces an unceasing amount of data. Costco is widely recognized and respected for its business practices but making critical business decisions with its data analysis processes are not easy tasks. As each Costco department employs a specific application, their data gathering is being done in different silos and the need of an enterprise portfolio has become necessary. Troux, an enterprise portfolio, is a robust and complex application and this project will serve as a self-service information portal intended for Executives, Enterprise and Solution Architects to integrate and align the business overall and make critical business decisions more efficiently. This solution will increase the utilization of Troux as information asset and also to maintain the flow of information among departments to create effective and meaningful reports.

Indigenizing the Digital Divide

Throughout this project, our goal was to gather enough data in order to create a greater sense of awareness regarding the technological gap between American Indian and Alaska Native communities and quality network connectivity. Past experience has shown that the coverage is spotty and mostly non-existent in certain towns within our research area—White Swan, specifically. The team used online sources to find coverage maps over the Yakama Indian Reservation and conducted a site visit to the land itself in order to check actual coverage and gather real-time connection readings. Our findings indicate that the big carriers (such as Verizon) are essentially not advertising the entire truth as they offer spotty data coverage. Next steps are to revisit the Nation and deliver this report for them to use as a preliminary study for their own use.

KairosPDX Learning Academy: Managing Documentation for Emergent Curriculum and Social-Emotional Learning

KairosPDX Learning Academy (KLA) is a new Portland, Oregon charter school aimed at attacking the racial achievement gap. Curriculum is both designed – based on the Common Core Standards, and emergent – evolving from the interests and curiosity of students. KLA also specifically teaches foundational life skills including: focus and self-control, perspective taking, communicating, making connections, critical thinking, taking on challenges and self-directed engaged learning. Crucial to this process is documentation – capturing and recording activity and behavior of individual children in order to create curriculum for them and track their development. An enormous amount of information – images, text, audio, and video – is generated for and about each student. I modeled for KLA an implementable cloud-based method to organize, store, manage, and retrieve information as needed for curriculum development, reporting, reflection, and longitudinal assessment of student development, particularly as regards social-emotional learning and life skills.
