CoCA Slide Project Presents: The 1982-1989 Slide Enterprise!

My capstone focused on beginning the preparation of CoCA’s slide collection for digitization as part of an ongoing effort to preserve CoCA’s history through their digital archives project. The slides contain images of exhibitions, artists, performances, forums and other events related to CoCA’s shows. Since CoCA has a large slide collection, the project focused on slides spanning the years 1982 – 1989. Over 1500 slides were viewed and organized into binders according to exhibition, total number of slides, duplicates and number of sheets in each section. The project also included creating an excel spreadsheet connecting the work with CoCA’s archival finding aid.

Dance Library Sustainable Policies Project

The California Ballet Company Library has been in progress for many years. Donations of books and magazines have been collected since the 1950’s. The quantity and diversity of the materials amassed demanded organization. A collection development policy, as well as a best practices cataloging document were definitely needed. Consultation with the stakeholders from CBC and research into the professional literature was undertaken. A mission statement, a vision statement, as well as guidelines on how to build the library, in order to meet that vision, were crafted and incorporated. These documents will shape the library and ensure its longevity and usefulness.

Digitizing Music Recitals ~ Fondren Library

Fondren Library has a collection of music recitals from the Shepherd School of Music that span from 1973 to the present. The early recordings are in reel-to-reel and cassette tape formats, which puts them at risk for degrading and also makes it difficult for patrons to access them. Fondren Library is digitizing the at-risk recordings and making them available through the IR to preserve them and increase access. As my part, I created a sample set of local name authority records for the performers on the recitals and then created a set of procedures based on my findings.

Edward & Asahel Curtis Online Photography Exhibit

Founded in 1894, the Mazamas is a Portland-based nonprofit organization, focused on mountaineering education. Mazamas members Edward Curtis, known for his Native American portrait photography, and Asahel Curtis photographed many expeditions. Previously, lack of resources kept those photographs stored away. Our group created an online, searchable exhibit of both the photographs and equipment typical of the era. Through research, assessment, digitization and metadata application, we curated an online exhibit which highlights early Mazamas history. Digitization and increasing public access will generate greater awareness of the Mazamas and promote their mission both locally and on a larger geographical scale.

Improving Metadata of Mormon Missionary Diaries

The collection of Mormon Missionary Diaries at the L Tom Perry Special Collections at Brigham Young University is a very difficult collection to search and find materials as there are three different databases that each have different information. The Whittaker Bibliography, the Manuscript Collection, and the Digital Collection. Each have cause confusion and frustration for both staff and patron because of the many ineffective an inaccurate searches. My project was bringing these three different databases together and transferring the metadata into a one new database.

It All Started on Front Street: Village Theatre Physical Archive Collection 1979-2017

This archival project, completed in conjunction with Village Theatre comprises historical perspective, inventory, arrangement, weeding, finding aids and rehousing for a minimally processed original collection of documents, photographic material and ephemera relating to their 37-year Mainstage production history in Issaquah and Everett. Deliverables include a database of collection materials with written instructions for accruals and maintenance of the remaining portions of the collection, and recommendations for further treatment such as digitization of A/V materials and options for a future digital archive.

Metadata Management of Scarecrow Video's Silent Film Collection

For my MLIS Capstone project, I examined each item in Scarecrow Video's silent film collection to correctly represent each film title, according to the rules of the Fundamental Requirements of Bibliographic Records (FRBR). Many of the titles reflected only the title of the DVD or VHS, not the titles of the films themselves. Cleaned-up records provide a more accurate reflection of Scarecrow's inventory and rental statistics, and they allow customers to more easily search the in-store database.

Moving a Medical Library

The Swedish Medical Center Library will be moving to a new and smaller location, due to the demolition of a portion of the 747 Broadway Building. The goal of this Capstone project was to drastically downsize the library’s physical collections, as the new library space will be decreasing by 75%. Determinations were made to either keep or discard journals, textbooks, and microfiche based on the needs of the medical community.

Preserving the Institutional History of OMSI

The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) is a large, non-profit museum located in the city of Portland Oregon that started has a simple city hall exhibition and now serves over 1 million visitors. There were three primary objectives driving the “Preserving the Institutional History of OMSI” project: to arrange and describe, increase access, and plan for future success. Accomplishing these goals has created the organizational structure of a successfully functioning archive and set the museum on a path to making its archival material available to the external community.

Scribe

After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey experienced rapid language reformation that shifted written Turkish from an Arabic script to a Latin-based alphabet. Consequently, some texts were transcribed inaccurately or included subjective editorial decisions. These discrepancies are detrimental to the preservation of Ottoman history and culture. Scribe mitigates the faith gap between Arabic and Latin-based Turkish manuscripts by standardizing the transcription workflow. Our solution offers dynamic verification of transcriptions’ integrity by facilitating the comparison of original Ottoman text with Latin Turkish. Scribe maintains the authenticity of primary source texts in order to preserve Ottoman tradition and literature.
