Evaluating Linkedin Learning with The Washington State Library

The Washington State Library pays over $400,000 each year to provide LinkedIn Learning to library patrons. LinkedIn Learning is an incredible online e-learning platform which provides access to courses. However, in light of "freely available" online learning platforms appearing, the state legislator has begun questioning the costs required to maintain the LinkedIn Learning partnership. As a result, the Washington State Library was asked to create a report and give it to the legislator outlining and evaluating the freely available alternatives out there, and comparing them to LinkedIn Learning. I made the report: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EdWQBl5gUpw5J8ovHoocsYqOsdRi5dcysEiWRh49H1s

Grievers Library Development

Grievers Library is a non-profit working to provide free bereavement literature to those who need it most, through free book boxes dispersed throughout Seattle. In developing this library further, I have expanded the physical collection, created a highly accessible tagging system with grieving users in mind, and curated online booklists that allow users to borrow recommended titles from their own public library. Living with a loss is overwhelming, but the search for support and comfort does not need to be.

Identifying and Preserving Community History: Archiving the UW Sephardic Studies Digital Collection

During my Capstone project, I prepared archival assets in the Sephardic Studies Digital Collection to become publicly available on UW's Special Collections website. Preparation included assigning item-level metadata to over one hundred digitized accessions of Sephardic community history materials. I implemented metadata standards set by the Sephardic Studies Program in collaboration with UW Libraries, which leaned on Dublin Core, RDA, and local standards to make UW Special Collections’ first collection with non-English materials of mixed media discoverable. This project laid the foundation for publishing this singular collection of specifically Sephardic archival material, challenging dominant narratives of North American Jewish life.

League of Legends Esports Alexa Skill - A New Way to Engage with Esports

Esports have an immense amount of data tracked and available during the game, but it’s not always accessible to interact with. This is why Riot Games (Creators of League of Legends & Valorant) tasked us with creating a fresh and fun way for new and experienced League of Legends (LoL) Esports fans alike to keep up with the games. Whether you want to ask which team is winning, what the standings are in the league, or set a reminder for your next game, the LoL Esports Alexa Skill is ready to immerse you in a new level of engagement.

Mapping Language: Representation of Immigrant Communities in the Pacific Northwest, 1880-1930

This work explores ways in which developing language used to describe immigrant groups reflects labor, industrial and land development interests, which may still influence our perceptions today. The site is both a digital exhibit and a pedagogical tool that can be used to form new connections and create original work. The work was designed to provide researchers with multiple "ways in" to the material, depending on learning preferences, and serves as a model for how we can analyze, host and curate a large and diverse amount of material and present it in accessible and engaging ways to encourage future research.

MatchLab: Democratizing University Research Opportunities

Finding research opportunities at universities is an extremely time-consuming and ineffective process that often leads to frustrated, empty-handed students, students who quickly churn out of roles due to poor fit, and research leads ending up behind schedule. Online research postings are often outdated, and the most common way principal investigators (PIs) find candidates -- through people they already know -- is neither an efficient nor inclusive process. To address this problem, we created MatchLab, an online platform that democratizes research opportunities and saves students and PIs time and frustration.

Mejorando la Colección

Our team partnered with a school librarian, from a K-12 public school district that has a significant percentage of Spanish-speaking students, to find titles in Spanish that could be added to the already existing collection. The team used our Spanish-speaking skills to search for titles spanning kindergarten through young adult reading levels. We vetted our selections with book reviews and recommended the resulting 200 titles for purchase. Some of the suggested titles have already been reviewed by the school librarian for potential selection. We hope every student can see their language and/or culture represented on their library’s shelves.

Metadata Management of Scarecrow Video’s Disney, Sci-Fi Television, and Film Noir Collections

Incomplete, out-of-date, or inaccurate information in Scarecrow Video’s Oz database hinders staffs’ ability to help patrons find desired titles and keep track of the collection. As of Spring 2022, we have corrected and added metadata–such as alternate titles, UPC and IMDB numbers, supplemental information, etc.–for 440 Film Noir titles, 614 Sci-Fi TV titles, and 459 Disney titles, totaling 1,512 revised titles. This project will improve accessibility for staff and patrons. Given the unique collection held at Scarecrow, cleaner and more up-to-date metadata will make it easier for staff to assist customers in finding their desired materials.

Metadata: It’s Everything

Arnold Library is a biomedical library part of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center recently migrated to a CONTENTdm system and aims to make the Archive dataset fully searchable for all Fred Hutch employees. To support the library in better facilitating information discovery for users, this project examined available CONTENTdm features and further improved the metadata standards. As a result, the project produced guideline documentation on how to employ finding aids to improve the search functionality of the collection. Additionally, this built the foundation for future work to further improve user information access and discovery within the CONTENTdm system.

Navigating the Legal Print: Academic Licenses in the UW Libraries

Academic research materials are a key resource for students and educators. Authorized actions - for example, making digital or print copies, scholarly sharing with colleagues, or disseminating works to other libraries (interlibrary loan) - are described in their legal licenses. For this project, we reviewed, amended, and categorized 698 licenses and legal materials in order to assist students, faculty, and staff in utilizing content in their academic research. With the conclusion of this project, the updated Alma database will better inform individuals on matters of Fair Use, Data Privacy, and Accessibility.
