TruthTube: Nutritional health Narratives In YouTube Shorts

The proliferation of short-form video platforms like YouTube Shorts has revolutionized health information dissemination. However, these platforms often prioritize engagement metrics over content reliability, exacerbating misinformation. This study examines how the content of nutritional health videos influences their popularity and viewer uptake, focusing on informative versus misinformative content. By analyzing video transcripts and comments using YouTube's APIs,, we identified themes and sentiment differences between video types. Informative videos foster positive viewer reactions, while misinformative ones elicit negativity. Our findings highlight the importance of content quality in online health discussions, aiding viewers in discerning reliable information and promoting informed decision-making.

Collections in the Ricci Institute

The Ricci Institute houses a collection of books and artifacts from China and East Asia between the 16th century to the 19th century. As a research institution, their primary focus is for scholars interested in this time period. Through this project, we realized that their presence online is only minimal at best. Teatime Treasures is a way for us to not only spread the word about this collection, but to also give the Ricci Institute an example of how they could potentially increase their digital presence, as well as showcasing their collection to a much wider and more diverse audience.

Communications Handbook for Pend Oreille County Library District

The information problem I addressed with my project was that POCLD did not have any centralized policies or guidelines for promotion of library events or social media presence. To combat this, I created social media guidelines, a brand book with logo and formatting information, and a PR Pack for quick reference on type of marketing for programs. This project will allow for each individual library in the district to take ownership of their own social media and program marketing. It will also provide consistency among POCLD's branding and communications allowing them to present a united identity to their community.

Howler: A Place That's Here to Hear Your Howl

University campuses across the nation find themselves in a mental health crisis and the University of Washington is no exception. With campus resources overburdened, our goal is to provide a resource which strengthens student resilience by positively affecting conversations about mental health. Howler is an anonymous online forum made just for UW students that allows them to safely and creatively express their experiences and find solidarity among their peers. Howler's diverse system of forums, or "packs," curates stories and reinforces community, and its multimedia storytelling supports connection and health coping processes.

Moments

With the expanding growth of music streaming platforms and subscriptions, listeners around the world use music as a way of expression and personal enjoyment. However, there are flaws within the music recommendation algorithms which recycle oversaturated content, lack transparency, and have innate popularity bias. Our app, Moments, aims to combat restrictive algorithms by giving users autonomy in the music discovery process. Through profiles and a map interface, people can discover and share music in an organic way by exploring others' music tastes around them. But that's just our Moment, what's yours?

The Brain Never Stops: The Power of Reading at Green Hill Academic School

Our project consisted of running a social media campaign for the Green Hill Academic School Library, located inside Washington State’s only fully-fenced, medium/maximum security juvenile detention facility. Our goal was to educate the public about the overall benefits of reading, the importance of meaningful library services for incarcerated youth, and direct potential donors to the library's Amazon Wishlist, which plays a critical role in the library’s ability to provide relevant collections to its young patrons. Since the start of our campaign, Green Hill Academic School library has gained 158 followers on social media, and 314 books have been purchased.

Vision Becomes Action: A Marketing Plan for the Instructional Materials Center at Sam Houston State University

The Instructional Materials Center (IMC) is a collection of resources designed to assist pre-service educators as they develop into effective teachers who generate positive change for schools. As a result of competing priorities through a global pandemic, the IMC has been underused from a lack of awareness of its existence. This project shares the creation of a marketing plan through stakeholder interviews and research of traditional marketing strategies critically applied to academic settings. The plan will guide staff of the IMC in communicating the value of the center through authentic storytelling while prioritizing success of organizational goals, sustainability, and longevity.
