Nuts and Bolts of Scholarly Publishing Workshop Series

Although most scholars must ‘publish or perish,’ graduate students and junior faculty members often receive minimal guidance on the publication process beyond ad hoc support from advisors. To provide a formal channel through which researchers can gain confidence in approaching scholarly publishing, we developed a workshop series to provide guidance around publication of an article in an academic journal. Two complementary workshops, one focused on journal selection and the other on publishing agreements, introduce open access and authors’ rights concepts while addressing common concerns and offering practical advice for navigating the publishing process from start to finish.

Research on the Inside: Preparing Incarcerated College Students for Success

Freedom Education Project Puget Sound is a nonprofit that provides a higher education program at the Washington Corrections Center for Women. The accredited program previously offered a research skills course that gave first-year students the skills necessary to conduct academic research in a context where there is no access to the internet or academic resources. This project is a re-visioning of the research instruction program that involved building information literacy workshops into a required first-year course by creating and delivering a new curriculum. It is part of a broader effort to expand the research program for FEPPS students.

Schniffer: All-in-One Network Security Solution

Small business owners are often willfully ignorant to the threats of data breaches, deeming it too costly and unnecessary which leaves them prime targets to cyber-attacks. Schniffer, created by INFO students Jason Peacher-Ton and Jingyu Yang, is a low-cost, all-encompassing network monitoring and vulnerability scanning tool, acting as a first line of defense for small businesses against cyber-threats.

AspenCat Cleanup

The Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC) is an organization that supports libraries statewide. CLiC’s AspenCat Union Catalog allows over 100 small and rural libraries to share resources. Small libraries often cannot devote lots of time to work on their catalogs and only twelve CLiC staff serve all of Colorado. That’s where I came in. At time of submission, I had examined over 600 brief and duplicate catalog records—over 400 of which I resolved by merging and/or overlaying. After supporting CLiC staff at cataloging trainings, on May 15 I traveled to Rocky Ford, CO to assist in a hands-on staff training.

Book Lust: Readers’ Advisory Toolkit

We created a toolkit based on Nancy Pearl’s four doorways approach to Readers’ Advisory, that may be used by any public library interested in creating or enhancing their RA program. Pearl’s approach is based on her own unique understanding of what appeals to readers, which helps library staff and patrons discover a wider array of books to select from. The Book Lust Readers’ Advisory Toolkit includes staff training, display materials, programming, a social media plan, and host website. All elements were implemented at the Kitsap Regional Library system and the Coeur d'Alene Public Library.

Developing Connections for Sand Point Children’s Library: Paving the road for educational success

Sand Point Campus, run by Solid Ground, provides both permanent and transitional housing, and offers multiple services to its 500 residents. The campus library, located in Santos Place, provides daily programs for the children and teens. Using observation, query, and data analysis, we determined that the library is not utilized to its full potential. The data allowed us to create an Action Plan that provides a synthesis of our findings, offers various program proposals, and makes suggestions for improvement, which the staff may reference for future planning.

Eckstein Middle School Makerspace

Eckstein Middle School, in NE Seattle, had a variety of underutilized library and technology materials, extra space, and student interest in undertaking creative projects. This capstone identified the predominant problems facing student downtime and addressed them through the creation of a makerspace within the library. The project was completed in three phases: inventory of current available materials and wishlist, programming and procedures binder, and hosting a Maker Fest extravaganza. Eckstein’s makerspace is a place to inspire and engage students to pursue STEAM fields by providing an unstructured learning environment for student exploration.

Finding their way: an information guide for new refugees in Southern Nevada

Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada (CCSN) is a nonprofit social services provider that serves individuals and families in need in the Las Vegas area, including over 3,000 refugees each year. Although information for refugees is freely available online, this information is not beneficial to individuals with limited English language proficiency or digital literacy. In partnership with CCSN, we created a physical informational resource guide for refugees located in Southern Nevada, which can be updated and translated by resettlement organizations across the country.

Grade Band Resource Consortium for Library Instruction

Librarians surveyed in multiple districts in the Greater Seattle Area use a myriad of standards, lessons, and resources to ensure student readiness. Alignment, resource organization, and lesson sharing is important for equity across districts and ideally across the nation. Benchmark standards for library and information skills help ensure students’ lifelong success. We have created a tool within the LMS, Schoology, called Grounded In Standards Based Teaching. GIST houses an alignment guide of ISTE, AASL, and CCSS and grade band lessons. This tool addresses inequity in library programs while fostering cross-curricular collaboration across the state, focusing on Seattle Public Schools.
