Each year the UW Information School accepts nominations for teaching excellence among our faculty through two separate awards. Tenure track faculty are eligible to win the Pedagogical Recognition for Our Faculty (PROF) Award in even years and non-tenure track faculty are eligible to win the Teaching Excellence and Creative Honors (TEACH) Award in odd years. The Information School's Recognition and Nominations committee announces eligible faculty in spring of each year and then accepts nominations for the awards from current students. The November issue of Seattle Business Magazine highlighted the region's Top 25 Innovators and Entrepreneurs. A project advised by Dr. Joyojeet Pal, a researcher in the iSchool's Technology & Social Change Group (TASCHA), was one of the teams named to this list. Pal's students, UW computer science undergraduates Clint Tseng, Heather Underwood and Sunil Garg, developed MultiLearn. The December 2009 issue of SMR Knowledge Services features an interview with UW iSchool faculty member Nancy Gershenfeld. Project Information Literacy's (PIL's) latest research report, Lessons Learned: How College Students Find Information in the Digital Age, was released this week (42 pages, PDF, 3 MB). Last spring, the PIL Team administered a large-scale survey to students enrolled at six U.S. college campuses (n=2,318), including the University of Washington. The survey collected data about how today's college students find information and conduct research for course-related work and in their everyday lives. This past Thursday Dr. Levy and the iSchool hosted an event with participation from Zen teacher Darlene Cohen and neuropsychologist Al Kaszniak to explore how meditation and other strategies might make multitasking at work less stressful. The iSchool's Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity (CIAC) is featured in a recent article in The New New Internet, a newsblog that reports on cybersecurity policy and technology. Under the title, "Top 10 Universities Preparing Future Cyber Security Professionals," the article notes that the CIAC "helps to teach and develop some of the future leaders in cyber security" and maintains "partnerships with industry leaders like Boeing and Microsoft as well as the Armed Forces." Graduates of the MSIM program appear as coauthors with Assistant Professor Kevin Desouza on four recently published and forthcoming papers. On Sept. 9, Muckleshoot tribal members and local and state dignitaries gathered to celebrate the opening of a new, 107,000-square-foot school. In addition to members of the Muckleshoot Tribal Council, Auburn School District Superintendent Kip Herren, State Sens. Claudia Kauffman and Pam Roach, Attorney General Rob McKenna and Gov. Shane Bunker, a UW student majoring in Informatics who will enter his senior year this fall, was named winner of last month's contest to name the UW's new mobile application. He submitted the entry 'm.UW'. Bunker's entry was chosen from more than 800 submissions./p> "The name was simple," said contest judge Harry Hayward, the UW's director of electronic media.
