Students set for showcase

The Information School Capstone event, our annual showcase of student projects, takes place on Wednesday, May 30, in the HUB on the UW campus. You can join us in person starting at 6 p.m. in the HUB Ballrooms on the second floor.

All are welcome to attend: industry professionals and employers; UW and iSchool alumni, students, faculty, and prospective students; and family and friends of the presenting students.

The highlight of the evening is an award ceremony showcasing presentations of premiere projects that were determined by judges. Capstone project collaborators include organizations from the public, private, and non-profit sectors. If you can’t make it in person, you can watch the livestream of the awards presentation beginning at 8 p.m.

With their Capstone projects, students in the iSchool’s master’s programs and undergrad Informatics program apply what they’ve learned in their classes by solving a real-world problem. Often, the students work with a partner from the private or nonprofit sectors.

Here are just a few featured recently on the iSchool website:

Airlift Northwest “Elevate”: Informatics students Jessica Basa, Tiffany Chen, J. Benjamin Leeds and Vincent van der Meulen teamed up to create a new communications tool for the nonprofit emergency airlift service, potentially saving valuable time during rescue missions.

T-Mobile data classification: The first step in stopping spammers on mobile networks is knowing how to find them. MSIM students Timothy Pace, Dania Tanzil and Manas Thakre have combined their skills and developed a way to identify ads and malicious content.

Queer Comics Database: LGBTQ comics are out there, but can be hard to find. MLIS students Le Button and Aydin Kwan worked with Geeks OUT to provide an easy starting point for people who want to learn about comics and diverse representation.

KEXP Shelves: Informatics students Adam Bourn, Monica Cao and John Harrison are creating a prototype of a tool that will work with the radio station’s content management system to allow DJs to explore the station’s vast music archive.

You can find details on these and dozens more projects on our Capstone projects page. More than 120 projects will be on display at the event on Wednesday evening.
