Michael Doane is an expert in information architecture and content management. As an experienced business consultant, he has worked with clients in all types of industries to develop data models and taxonomies for their enterprise content management systems.
Doane, a newly appointed iSchool lecturer and master of library science alumnus (2005), brings his 18-year experience to graduate students so they can learn both the theory and practice of information management (IM) in a wide variety of settings.
“I like to teach students how to use the 'tools of the trade' that they will most likely be using in the business world if they pursue work in the information management field. I also like to discuss current topics in the IM field as we learn about the foundations of the discipline. For me, teaching is about motivating and training students to both 'think' and 'do',” says Doane, who has been teaching part-time for the iSchool since 2009.
Doane has worked for Ascentium, SchemaLogic and Avenue A – Razorfish, where he consulted with industry-leading clients such as Expedia, Microsoft, Providence Health & Services, Nike and Weyerhaeuser. He has had his own consulting firm, Term Management, since 2011.
However, when asked what brings him into the classroom full time he responds, “I think students in the iSchool are some of the best and brightest around, and are a constant source of energy and thoughtfulness.”
