Grading Guidelines and Tools

The Faculty Resources on Grading (FROG) web page provides guidance for instructors in determining the most appropriate grading method for their courses. The iSchool has also adopted its own criteria for grading graduate courses.

Grading Tools

All grades are submitted electronically using one of the tools listed below.

GradePage

If you have not been using the Catalyst GradeBook tool or Canvas LMS throughout the quarter, GradePage is the simplest way to submit final grades electronically. GradePage is easily accessed through your MyUW. In the My Class Resources section locate the link labeled Submit class grades online. Be sure to submit grades for all sections of your class; even if you all meet together, students in different iSchool degree programs register in different sections and are graded in separate GradePages. You can find additional information on GradePage from Catalyst.

GradeBook

If you have been using the Catalyst GradeBook tool throughout the quarter to give students assignment grades, you can submit final grades to the Registrar using the same GradeBook. Find additional information on GradeBook in the Catalyst help section. For assistance with GradeBook, contact gahelp@uw.edu or ask your graduate assistant.

Canvas

Instructors keeping grades in their Canvas course site may import final grades directly into GradePage for submission to the Registrar. This is a two-step process so be sure to review the instructions in advance of the grade submission due date.
If you miss the deadline or are submitting grades for an off-calendar course, use the online Grade Change Request Form.

Returning Papers to Students

If you are not returning student assignments in class or electronically through Canvas or the Catalyst Collect It tool, you can give the papers to the receptionist at the front desk in MGH 370 and the receptionist will make a class folder if there are many papers or put them into individual students’ folders if there are only a few.

Papers are kept in the folders for two quarters after you've returned them. Unless they hear otherwise, staff will shred unclaimed homework after that time, if you would prefer to retrieve unclaimed assignments as samples for future classes, please contact ireception@uw.edu.

Course Evaluations

All iSchool faculty are required to distribute course evaluations at the end of each quarter. Approximately the 4th or 5th week of the quarter, the academics coordinator will contact you about your preferences in course evaluation forms to prepare them for you by the end of the quarter.  Once the evaluations are received in our office, they will be distributed to your mailboxes within the iSchool or the home department where you reside.

Day & Evening Courses

The iSchool will order forms for distribution and will place them in your mailbox well in advance of the last day of class.  Information on the course evaluation process and forms can be found at the Office of Educational Assessment. Please read the evaluation instructions carefully.

Online Courses

A default online survey of evaluation questions is created for all online courses taught by the iSchool. Surveys are not created for the classes administered through UW Professional and Continuing Education as part of the School Library Media Specialist Certificate. Access to the evaluation site is limited to the students in the class during a limited time frame.  You will receive similar notifications at the same time the students do to keep you aware of the timeframe and response rates to the questionnaires. To ensure the least biased, most informed opinion of the course, the survey is initially set to open on the last week of instruction and close before the final grade officially posts.

At any time if you have any questions about the process, you are welcome to contact the academics coordinator who will be happy to answer your questions.
