Connecting the Dots: Racism in Algorithmic Systems
Technology is being used to automate and worsen inequality. Algorithmic bias goes beyond privacy concerns. Big data systems including facial recognition, social media platforms, and search engines can replicate racial bias in the datasets they are built with, even when race is not explicitly included as a factor in the decision and perpetuate white supremacy.
This panel, organized by the Greenlining Institute and the UW Critical Platform Studies Group and presented by the UW iSchool DataLab, brings together policy advocates, community organizers, and tech experts to discuss how inequality is manifested in these technologies. There will be an open mic for people to ask questions and brainstorm community-rooted solutions to racism in tech and algorithms.
Panelists include:
- Nikkita "KO" Oliver |Community organizer, abolitionist, and attorney. Case Manager at Creative Justice
- Shankar Narayan | ACLU of Washington Director, Technology and Liberty Project
- Anna Lauren Hoffmann | Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Information School
- Pedro Perez | Executive Director, Geeking Out Kids of Color
- Haleema Bharoocha | Tech Equity Policy Fellow at The Greenlining Institute
