New-ERA

Create a system that acts as an intermediary between ShakeAlert earthquake warnings and the public, such as schools in Washington State. The system broadcasts earthquake warnings and aftermath effects related to earthquakes in a fast and reliable manner such that students and faculty can take appropriate actions to protect themselves. The system can be easily adopted to target different groups such as first responders and families. In addition, the system determines some baseline latency metrics between different components to offer a comparison between different solutions and evaluate the efficiency in broadcasting ShakeAlert information.

Novant: The Future of Employment

Novant is a platform that facilitates a dynamic shift-based ecosystem for businesses and hourly paid employees. High turnover rates, scheduling conflicts, and limited opportunities impair the current system of employment. We benefit businesses by eliminating their turnover risks and consequences by redefining an employee’s work arrangement to a single shift. Employees with skills that are transferable across stores, brands, and industries will now have opportunities to work shifts at any business on the platform in order to maximize their earnings and have ultimate control of their schedule.

Produce Music

In the age of the solo bedroom producer, the art of music production has moved away from collaboration, towards competition. We believe that cultivating a community centered around growth can enable musicians to break through creative blocks while creating meaningful connections. Produce Music is a community platform by musicians for musicians, with the perfect tools for giving feedback, collaborating, and learning. Semantic Analysis - Text Classification of Unstructured Customer Comments

Smartsheet is a cloud-based work management platform. To continuously innovate and improve its product and services, it constantly gauges customer sentiment and feedback via Net Promoter Score surveys. However, due to large inflow of raw comments from these surveys, and no existing mechanism to aggregate the comments other than manual intervention, the useful data is underutilized. Our solution is to apply machine learning techniques to automatically categorize the comments into useful categories. This categorized data is then presented as a dashboard to internal stakeholders to gain deeper insights into Smartsheet features and services.

The Bandit Problem: Are You Winning Enough?

With the use of A/B Testing, two major challenges are faced by the online subscription industry today, i.e., to maximize conversions of trial users while testing product variants and to address ever changing user preferences. This project involves performance evaluation of Multi-armed Bandit Algorithms, as alternatives to conventional A/B testing, that balances exploration and exploitation during the learning process to quickly identify the overall winning feature variant. Contextual Bandit Algorithms are also explored to predict what works best for a given user based on their attributes. This approach helps optimize the conversion rate and support personalization at the user level.

Where-able

For people with visual impairments, navigating the Seattle public transportation system without assistance is challenging due to the reliance on visual cues. With the help of Where-able, people with visual impairments are able to input their bus number and route so that the wearable vibrates when the bus is approaching, signaling the arrival of the bus. Our app and hardware enables users with visual impairments to be better supported when getting around the city of Seattle by eliminating one of the struggles of the public transportation system.

A Framework for Augmented and Virtual Reality Job Training: Using Digital Realities and Gamification to Improve Workplace and Educational Efficiency

This project is meant to determine the feasibility and willingness for libraries to use virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies (digital realities) in order to solve modern information problems. As a whole, library employees were generally enthusiastic about the technology. Unfortunately, research on AR/VR software and a survey of library professionals revealed a lack of training, budget concerns, uncertainty of its usefulness, and a lack of meaningful software. However, the secondary aspect of this project would help alleviate some of these concerns with the creation of freely available software that are meaningful and relevant toward libraries and makerspaces.
