Election Integrity Partnership 2022: Rapid Response Coding Schema

This project developed a coding schema for analysis of incidents of mis- and disinformation present on social media within a rapid response framework. The goal was to support responses that both inform near-term detection and response to mis- and disinformation and that support long-term mixed-methods academic research at various levels. The project specifically focused on problematic information with the potential to negatively impact trust in elections through voter disenfranchisement with respect to the US 2022 midterm elections.

Evaluating Linkedin Learning with The Washington State Library

The Washington State Library pays over $400,000 each year to provide LinkedIn Learning to library patrons. LinkedIn Learning is an incredible online e-learning platform which provides access to courses. However, in light of "freely available" online learning platforms appearing, the state legislator has begun questioning the costs required to maintain the LinkedIn Learning partnership. As a result, the Washington State Library was asked to create a report and give it to the legislator outlining and evaluating the freely available alternatives out there, and comparing them to LinkedIn Learning. I made the report: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EdWQBl5gUpw5J8ovHoocsYqOsdRi5dcysEiWRh49H1s

Family Document Digitization

Many people have piles of papers and photos that they would like to digitize, but they don't know where to start. Family Document Digitization is a website that takes users step-by-step through the process of digitizing, storing, and sharing their letters, photos, diaries, and more. The website features blog posts on how to digitize, store, and share their documents using accessible equipment, free applications, and household objects. The project sponsor is Cook Memorial Library in La Grande, Oregon, a rural public library serving users of all ages.

Fiction Filters: Crowdsourcing Website

Fiction subject tagging in libraries is largely ineffectual for a variety of reasons—e.g. a lack of robust, open-access vocabularies, the difficulty and time commitment of assessing the contents of fiction, and unsuitable software. In partnership with Fiction Filters: Taxonomy for Adult Fiction, who created our core vocabulary of tags, we created a website in which users tag previously read books in subject areas such as character traits and tropes, using their own or pre-existing tags. This gives power to readers to highlight what they find most important and appealing about books, browse by personal interests, and filter out unwanted content.

Fiction Filters: Taxonomy for Adult Fiction

Fiction subject tagging in libraries is largely ineffectual for a variety of reasons—e.g. a lack of robust, open-access vocabularies, the difficulty of assessing the contents of unread fiction, and unsuitable software. In partnership with the Fiction Filters: Crowdsourcing Website group—who created the host website—we created a core vocabulary of tags in subject areas such as character traits and tropes, which users can add to and use to tag previously read books. This gives power to readers to highlight what they find most important and appealing about books, browse by personal interests, and filter out unwanted content.

FinGrow

Young people in college often have problems with debt management, don't have access to financial classes, and set fewer financial goals. To address these problems, we created a mobile application that connects low-income young adults to pro-bono financial advisors for individualized support. Users will be able to track their financial progress at their own pace and get one-on-one coaching with their advisors regarding their goals or concerns. Our app will help more young adults learn how to manage their credit and debt, and create the habit of setting financial goals that fit their lifestyle in the long term.

Flipgrid Platform Health: Empowering Healthy Online Learning

The Flipgrid team at Microsoft believes that a healthy online learning platform is the combination of the sense of safety and the level of engagement from its users on the site. Using PowerBI as a vessel to track Flipgrid’s platform content and user activity, our mission was to help the Flipgrid team refine how they measure the health of their platform. The insights generated from this report will support Flipgrid’s effort to create platform policies and feature enhancements that make the online platform a safe environment for all users as well as a source of good connections and healthy experiences.

Fostering Environmental Literacy

This project utilizes programs, an online resource guide, and an EduKit to strengthen environmental literacy and love for the outdoors in Central Delaware. These successful programs have resulted in an enthusiastic, constant attendance, and the crafts and stories from the 'Wednesdays in the Woods' programs have inspired great passion around the environment for both kids and families.

From the Ground Up: Facilitating Equity-Focused Partner Tracking

Northwest Harvest's Learning and Impact (L&I) department is focused on the implementation of equity-focused systems to fight food injustice. To that end, it's critical for them to maintain comprehensive, transparent records of their community partnerships, with an emphasis on tracking information that can be used to foster growth of programs and partnerships through the lens of antiracism. In order to help realize that system, I conducted a departmental needs assessment centered around Salesforce data fields, then presented a compilation of my findings and data field requests to Northwest Harvest’s Salesforce administrator, and we established a rough timeline for implementation.

Funds to Vote: Who Funds Our Government

Our project picks up from the 2021 project, Funds to Vote, a website focused on creating transparency between American voters and politicians’ funding. American politics is full of jargon, confusing statistics, and an overwhelming amount of information, especially for the average voter. We improved the UX/UI to create a more user-friendly experience, modernized the old codebase, and added the “Congressperson Comparison Tool” feature to the website. We did this in hopes of helping American voters make more informed decisions regardless of background in the political sphere and empowering them to vote for politicians who truly align with their values.
