Oversized Document Solutions at the Museum of Flight

A recent renovation at the Museum of Flight, in Seattle, WA, made way for an overhaul of storage capabilities, particularly for oversized archival materials like blueprints, posters, and photographs. In order to utilize the newly acquired flat file drawers, we inventoried and organized all oversized materials, created new artificial collections and scope notes, and strategized a storage plan for better archival navigation and stewardship of aviation history. This new organization plan will be implemented by the Museum of Flight for all future oversized acquisitions and allow for better collocation, navigability, and preservation.

Preserving Student Voices of the Past, Present, and Future

For over 100 years, The Daily Utah Chronicle has published the student voices of the University of Utah. Many of these stories have been archived, but there are significant chunks missing. Just over 23% of the Chrony’s work has not been archived, and there are no procedures in place to keep the archive updated. I wrote a manual for them containing an in-depth analysis, a plan of action, and a concise archival process for leadership to implement. This will provide a clear path to archiving the past, and be a good compass for preserving the student voices of the future.

Preserving the Conservation Movement: Digital preservation and dissemination models for the “Evolution of the American Conservation Movement, 1850-1920” digital collection

This project evaluated models for the preservation and redistribution of the collocated Law Library of Congress digital collection material within the American Memory Project “Evolution of the American Conservation Movement, 1850-1920” collection, which has been decommissioned, making access to this material difficult. Keeping these materials together and accessible provides users with a historical context for current conservation activities and legal proceedings. The final models selected are sub-pages highlighting the collection on the Statutes at Large digital collection Articles and Essays page, a cascading timeline StoryMap showcasing important years, and In Custodia Legis blog posts promoting the aforementioned models.

Preserving the Voices of History: A Lewis County Oral History Project

Lewis County has a rich, vibrant history which shapes the lives of all those who reside and work there in ways that are complex and multifaceted. However, firsthand accounts of historical events and their impact are in short supply and, with every passing year, those who were alive to experience those events are slipping away forever. Guided by the Lewis County Historical Museum’s director, I gathered oral history interviews from county residents on events that shaped their lives and the county itself. These interviews will be preserved in the oral history archive to inform and enlighten future generations.

Protecting Scarecrow Video’s African Film Collection

Scarecrow Video holds the largest publicly available video collection in the US. Their vast foreign film section includes many irreplaceable films from less established movie industries, making it a high priority for assessment in order to care for and protect these films. This project involved an audit of about 40% of their African film section, resulting in a list of films to be added to Scarecrow’s Rental by Agreement (RBA) program, as well as the identification of possible orphan works for future digitization, and guidance for further assessment and protection of this collection.

SIFF: Building Your Archive From The Ground Up

Phase II of the SIFF capstone focused on preparing items for the online archive. This process involved scanning, photographing, and cataloging the digital and physical items in SIFF’s collection. These items would populate the online archive once made available not only for the general public but also for future archivists and researchers interested in film history and film festivals. The deliverables for this capstone include not only the website for the online archive but also a preservation plan and a finding aid for the physical items of the collection.

Skagit Valley College Archival Collection Project

Skagit Valley College (SVC) has been collecting historic materials for decades but never had the chance or the resources to organize and house them. This project seeks to lay the groundwork for an archive, offering access to materials for the upcoming centennial anniversary in 2026 and beyond. The project outcomes, including processes, recommendations, and documentation, are designed to pave the way for SVC to carry forward with standardized practices for the project. These outcomes will set the foundation for a lasting resource that will provide insights into the college's past and guidance for future endeavors in education and community engagement.

Taking the Temperature on Archival Outreach: An examination of Donor Outreach at Institutional Archives

A perennial issue of stewarding archival collections is getting the word out about our processing and preservation concerns prior to donation. Within the last fifteen years, there has been a substantial amount of scholarship concerning donation strategies at institutional archives. It has largely focused on diversifying the contents of the archive through non-extractive methods. Donor education is integral, as there is pervasive misunderstandings concerning repository capacity. While practitioners understand that their collections are not equitable or not representative of the community, capacity limitations restrict their ability to implement structure formalized outreach programs, which are necessary to remedy these generational issues.

The Archives are the Story: Processing and Cataloging the Self-Help Graphics and Art Founder Archives

In collaboration with Self Help Graphics and Art (SHG), this project processed, condition reported, created metadata, and rehoused 315 archival artworks by the organization’s co-founders, Sister Karen Boccalero, Antonio Ibañez, and Carlos Bueno. The research culminated in two finding aids for each sub-collection. These collections evidence the origins and early artwork of the co-founders, who collectively lit the fire for an organization with 50 years of history and significance to Chicanx and Latinx artists in Los Angeles still burning bright today. The project aims to make these previously unprocessed collections accessible to SHG’s local community of neighbors, artists, and researchers.

The State of Internet Privacy - Blacklight Archiver

Our project seeks to augment the existing Blacklight tool to enable users to compare current and previous ‘scans’ for a website, so that users are cognizant of how companies manage their data and are better equipped to take steps to secure it. The Blacklight Archiver, a product of tech publication The Markup, enables users to easily track online surveillance. By providing users with point-in-time comparisons of cookie-based website trackers, Blacklight users are able to see which websites are the largest surveillance offenders. This publicly-available product is useful to journalists and consumers alike.
