Digital Archive Enhancement Project: Streamlining Document Management for UW Farm

The “Digital Archive Enhancement Project" addresses inefficiencies in document management and accessibility. Focusing on importing Weekly Dirt newsletters from MailChimp to the UW Farm website and migrating files from Google Drive to OneDrive, the project aims to enhance data organization and archival processes. Results include the successful establishment of a stable link for the Weekly Dirt newsletters, improved accessibility for historical documents, and streamlined document management procedures. By facilitating easier access to valuable historical resources, the project makes a significant difference in the lives of UW Farm stakeholders, researchers, and the wider community, fostering increased engagement and knowledge dissemination.

Folksonomy in Fanfiction: A Catalog of Our Own

I developed a seminar that teaches undergraduate students, specifically English majors, about a newer form of cataloging in a way that negates the need for any prior knowledge about cataloging. My seminar takes a look at the folksonomy created and maintained in the popular fanfiction website Archive of Our Own (AO3) and how it is different from other forms of cataloging. I do this in part by emphasizing the difference between folksonomies and taxonomies and by comparing the AO3 folksonomy to the library of congress subject headings (LCSH). This seminar is able to be taught anywhere at any time.

GeoHealth Wastewater Infectious Disease Monitoring

GeoHealth is a web-based platform addressing the information gap in tracking infectious diseases via wastewater data analysis. It offers real-time insights and risk assessments to help communities understand and mitigate health threats, specifically from COVID-19. Utilizing data from national wastewater facilities, the platform provides statistical risk scores and visualizes trends of disease prevalence. GeoHealth significantly enhances public health literacy, equipping individuals with the necessary tools to proactively manage health risks, thereby making a profound difference in public safety and preparedness against infectious diseases.

HazingInfo.org

Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them, regardless of consent. Across college campuses, hazing among social organizations is a continuing issue due to obscure or undocumented hazing-prevention resources. HazingInfo.org is a free, comprehensive database of information showcasing a school’s actions to prevent hazing through hazing reports, policies, and legislation. This site centralizes hazing resources by surfacing information that can be buried within school websites. HazingInfo.org is an accessible way for students and families to make informed decisions in enrolling at a school or joining an organization.

How To Train Your Chatbot

With the continuing rise of Artificial Intelligence, young students are especially vulnerable to misconceptions and misuse of AI. Many teachers are also unfamiliar with the new technology. How To Train You Chatbot is an online learning platform that introduces AI to middle school students. The website modules explain prompt engineering, fact-checking, and the ethical implications of interacting with AI. By using this platform, teachers can encourage critical thinking, prevent academic misconduct, and help students use platforms like ChatGPT to enhance their learning. As AI continues to evolve, our platform empowers students to build a mindful relationship with artificial intelligence.

Make Syllabi Work for You! Tools and Methods for Liaison Librarians

Syllabi analyses have long been used by librarians to inform collection development and information literacy instruction. However, time-intensive manual syllabi analyses have only been viable in smaller institutions with dedicated librarian capacity. Community college librarians, who tend to serve large institutions with limited capacity, have been unable to benefit from this approach. I collaborated with liaison librarians at Portland Community College (PCC) to develop an accessible and automated syllabi analysis method. I successfully identified and customized an open-source text mining tool to create PCC-specific query templates, and developed detailed documentation to empower librarians to use and customize the tool themselves.

Retirement Adequacy Project

Achieving a comprehensive assessment of retirement benefits estimates and details can be a challenging task for anyone, especially for multiemployer pension plan participants. Our project, in collaboration with Rael & Letson, aims to make retirement planning more accessible and engaging for everyone, regardless of age or financial expertise. This platform allows individuals to conveniently access essential retirement planning information and pension resources, empowering them to make informed decisions about their financial future and secure retirement savings. From this, we hope to enhance awareness and accessibility of pension plans and retirement benefits for a broader audience.

The Misinformation Play Pack: Play-Based Educational Resources for Community Information Literacy

Current developments in technology have increased young people’s exposure to digital misinformation. Since the ability to critically and mindfully evaluate digital content has become a vital skill, I worked with the UW KidsTeam research group to develop educational resources teaching about misinformation with play-based learning experiences. These activities were tested over four co-design sessions with teens, and were designed with the framework of Radical Change Theory to implement not only a dynamic learning environment, but a community-driven approach to information literacy.
